The Good & The Bad

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
My roommate and I (late twenties/early thirties, young professionals)have lived here for a year. Here's our open and honest opinions for what it's worth!
GOOD: Location. Halfway between downtown and Broad Ripple, the location is great for the price and the square footage (except for the studio/garden level units). You will not find cheaper units with this type of quality and conveniences with such a close proximity to downtown! Also, some of the units are incredibly upscale and absolutely beautiful in their architecture and design (wood floors, archways above doors, sunrooms, etc.)
BAD: Location. Although the 3 blocks behind the building is the historic "Meridian Park" area lined with mature trees and beautiful (some of them million-dollar) houses, the general area can become very sketchy very quickly. If you look at crime data online, there is quite a bit of criminal activity within 1-5 miles of the apartments, though the building itself has remained largely untouched. Recently, however, there was some car vandalism in the parking lot and trespassing in the courtyard. I would highly advise against walking around the local neighborhood at night by yourself (though this is good advice for anywhere you live!). If you have never lived in a major city before, you will be in for some surprises (e.g. homeless people on the corner). That said, the building and grounds have always seemed very safe, and they are protected by locked gates and surveillance cameras. The very popular Indianapolis Children Museum is virtually across the street. The apartments also face Meridian (one of the busiest streets downtown) which probably reduces the amount of crime committed at this specific location. As single females, we would still recommend this complex to almost anyone despite the not-so-great surrounding areas. The management also conducts background checks on all residents-to-be...which is not the case at every apartment complex.
GOOD: The Management. The property manager (Doug) is WONDERFUL, and will quickly respond to any need or concern you may have. Similarly, the maintenance staff is quick to respond to problems, very efficient, and very kind and respectful. We had a furnace issue during the winter and called the emergency maintenance line at 10:00pm. Ten minutes later, there was a knock at our door, and our entire furnace was replaced in 1 day.
GOOD/BAD: Parking. Some of these reviews suggest parking is a problem. If you return to your apartment before 10pm on weeknights, and by midnight on the weekends, you shouldn't have any problems. In the event that no space exists, there is a back parking lot often forgotten about that is accessed via the back alley. Also, street parking is ALWAYS available on Meridian, though you risk the possible accidents/damage that may occur to any car parked on a very busy street in any part of town.
GOOD/BAD: Bugs. We've had some problems with cockroaches, but the management has always sent out an exterminator to take care of the problem immediately.
BAD: As other have already stated, these units are noisy (especially the plumbing). However, you adapt to the sounds like you would in any environment. Interestingly, despite ancient plumbing, the water pressure in the showers is fantastic.
GOOD: The residents living here are primarily Caucasian, but they are young (college-aged), old, single, married with kids, ---, straight, etc. Whatever your cultural or racial background, you will most likely feel very comfortable in this open-minded apartment environment.
Happy apartment hunting! Good luck. uWDgQKY3Vkv8FKIsB8Ax
