Not a great place to live
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 1/24/2006
Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2005
This was the first apartment I moved to in Indy. The location is great, the grounds and model apartment were nice, leasing agent was very friendly. They are really good at selling the place.
After moving in, it took awhile to get the move-in items fixed. During the time that I lived there, it was really apparent that the maintenance group is understaffed. It took much longer than it should have to get things fixed. My A/C broke many times and did not work right until the outside unit was finally replaced. Most of the maintenance staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. The ones that were not helpful either seemed unwilling to help or too busy. The advantage of living in an apartment is to have maintenance taken care of, and The Cottages always fell short in that category.
The office staff was always nice to me. Yes, they will nickel and dime you on every fee possible including move-out. They are within their rights to do that, although it isn't particularly nice of them. The move-out fees really seemed like an attempt to keep from paying any deposit. Notices and letters always seemed dated several days before they were actually sent/posted on doors. One time, they were actually going around checking smoke detectors and posting the notices that they were entering apartments to do so, at the same time. I was home at the time and it bugged me that something fairly routine like that was not communicated to the residents in advance. Other notices were obviously addressing problems that were occurring with pets, fireworks, trash/dumping things down drains, and even crime.
As far as crime, I never had anything stolen or damaged or had my apartment broken into. But there is definitely a criminal element around. You will see police activity. I remember seeing two youths running between some buildings. I thought they were playing until an IPD officer came running after them and tackled one of them. This was on a weekend afternoon in broad daylight. But its not like that happened everyday. So, its not the safest complex.
Most of the amenities are pretty run down. I was never able to use the tennis courts (no nets), I'd have to go the nearby park.
I lived there for three years. I initially moved in because some friends lived there, it was close to work, and really cheap for the area. I left because they raised my rent every year until it was no longer worth the price. If the price is too good to ignore, just be aware of what you're getting into before you move in.
