Darby Court

I wouldn't do it again.
The layout was nice; I had a little patio, and the area where *I* lived was pretty quiet. There are nice ammenities: washer/dryer in unit, tennis courts, jogging trail, pool, decent amount of parking spaces. I was a little upset management cut down a nice tree I had without notifying me first. Trees aren't cheap, and it could have been transplanted. It had been there for a couple years-- it's not like it was a new, unapproved decoration.
However, there were some serious cons. First, it is located in Speedway. Think very hard if you are a college student or recent graduate. Speedway is a $40 cab ride one way from Broad Ripple, and about $25 downtown. There isn't much to do in Speedway if it isn't race time...one Applebee's, Kelly's pub, and lots of establishments you might be scared to frequent in small groups (one called by many of the locals-- I'm not kidding-- the "Stop and Stab"). Speedway has charming areas, but the night life wasn't for me or any of the friends I made around my age. Also, on more than one occassion I did see cars broken into near the trash compactor in the back of the neighborhood. It is still Speedway.
Second, the first neighbors I had upstairs were involved in serious illegal activity. My neighbors that used to live across the hall told me the guy offered to sell them drugs. One morning as I walked my dog, I passed the guy's Escalade (how stereotypical is that') and heard him screaming into the phone that he would "f-ing kill" the person on the other end. They couldn't evict the people, but Darby management did do the right thing by choosing not to renew their lease with them.
My power bill was pretty unpredictable the first year. The walls are very thin, and the living room was freezing in the winter (with the big sliding glass door). In fall and spring, my electric bill was about $40-$50, in summer I paid about $60-$70, but in winter, my bills were ALWAYS more than $100 a month-- the highest being $130. On that note, the thin walls meant you heard every door slam and every raised voice. I even heard people on the phone in their apartments when my doors were shut.
The management changes with every season. I have had Lisa, Heather, Tracey, Jason...it's a revolving door of management. However, almost every leasing consultant I met was courteous and professional. So...they hire good people, but they can't keep them, apparently.
The toilets don't flush well. I had three friends who moved into the complex around the time I did, and they all experienced the same thing. Lots of times, you didn't even know what clogged the toilet in the first place-- it just sucked (or didn't suck).
Also, the water is city water, with no softener, which means gummy hair; but on the bright side the water pressure was good, and I rarely ran out of hot water.
I'm personally not happy with the fact that I didn't get my deposit returned and was CHARGED (in addition to getting $900 up front from me in deposits!!!), and I'd be interested to see if many people actually do get those refunded. Oh well...it's just money, right' Can't take it with you when you go, but it still hurts.
There are some good people in Speedway, but it wasn't for me. Darby, in particular, is just ok. I did like the washer/dryer though, and if you're on a budget, it's cheaper than living in other areas of Indianapolis.

I've lived in Darby Court for 3 years and I've never seen any drug traffic - but then again I guess it depends on where you live (within the community). As far as Darby not being able to keep their staff, I happen to know that the Sexton's (who own Darby and many other properties throughout the city) believe in rotating their staff among their other properties, in other words, they're not "losing" people, just cross-training them. Don't know if this is a good idea, but at least I wanted to set the record straight.
