Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I have lived here for a year so far and thinking about another year because I have always felt safe here. The management has been very friendly and there's always someone in the office when they're open.
You can tell the apartments themselves are a bit old (1960-70s') by the fixtures but they are pretty well-maintained with a few quirks. Mine has one drafty window from where you can see the roof settled and cracked a little bit. A floorboard in the hallway creaks, etc... Nothing big, not exactly 5-star, but great for the price and size (my A/C and heater work like a charm and the pipes never froze). I love the location for shopping and going on walks, but I don't really walk in the apartments because there are no sidewalks and some people leave their dog's poop in the grass. Other than that, the grounds seem clean and I love the trees in the middle of the property. They are good in the winter about salting the walkways and they clean the common areas every Sunday. There is a small laundry room in each building which is VERY nice and some apartments have their own hookups.
On the downside, I have had a problem with the maintenance person trying to let himself in with barely a knock. The first time I was breast-feeding, the second I was sleeping (in the nude) and not planning in answering the door at all because my hubby wasn't home and I wasn't expecting anyone. Luckily the door was latched at the top!
As with any apartment you can expect to have your share of druggies, noise, and bad neighbors. Sometimes the hallway smells like cigarettes or pot, and on occasion the smell comes in the window. It has increased in the past couple weeks since a new tenant has moved into my building, along with the loud arguments. This will definitely be addressed with management before I decide if I will renew my lease. You can't expect NOT to have this kind of thing in an apartment (rich private gated communities just have more expensive drugs), but you DO have to report it so it can get resolved. Management can't do anything about it if they don't know about it. And if they still can't fix the problem, call the cops.
I keep my door locked and don't bother anyone, have met a couple friendly people and for the most part, it's been quiet for me with a few exceptions, but I have never felt unsafe here. I have lived in a number of apartments and I'd say this was one of the best, especially with it being in a good neighborhood.
