My young daughter was proud to have her first apartment. We chose this place because it seemed fairly secure - private, off the main road, and we were told the doors to the entrances into the buildings were locked at all times and people could only gain access to the building by being "buzzed in" by residents. Joke - the doors were propped open all day and night. Goose droppings galore (from the geese on the lake). But the worst came only 2 weeks after she moved in - she came home from work at 11:00 pm one night, and was getting out of her car when she was assaulted by two fine young men with a sawed off shotgun and a hand gun. She was made to lie on the ground while she was robbed, with both guns to her head. The police officers at the scene pointed out that the parking lots were not well lit. She moved back home the next day. I will say that the management handled it well (likely because they realized the liability potential) she was allowed to break her lease and received full deposit returned, so we cannot complain about the management, they were very kind to her. The apartment was "cute."

You can get mugged anywhere. Even in the "securest" of places.
