List of Issues

1) The gym is very small. It is poorly maintained and not ventilated. There are only 4 pieces of equipment: a weight station, an elliptical trainer, a tread mill, and a stationary bike. No free weights, no bench. After 5pm it gets pretty crowded in there. Also, it's advertised to be open from 7am to 9pm. On weekends I have found the main door locked as late as 10am. Some of the equipment is damaged.

2) The advertised saunas are very small and old. The one time I used them I saw a loose board with nails sticking out.

3) The pools are very, very busy in the summer. Lots of kids.

4) There are two man-made lakes that attract LOTS of geese and ducks. They stay year round a crap everywhere. If you get an apartment around the lake, expect dozens of ducks to sleep in your yard. They also walk around the complex and block the road when you are driving through. There are chemicals and grasses that will dissuade them from nesting, but Lake Castleton does not use them.

5) Crime rate is high as other people have mentioned. About once a month we get a note on our door from the office about a recent break-in. The most recent one involved several people that broke into an apartment and beat a woman. I personally haven't had any security problems (maybe because I'm on the "good side" of the complex), but when I moved in my neighbor had pry marks all around his door. There is a security guard. From what I can tell he is over 60 yrs old, has a bad eye, and is rarely on duty.

6) The rent is cheap but you will soon find that the quality of the apartments are not great. The tiling and molding are pretty shoddy. The pipe under the bathroom sink has duct tape around it. The windows are HORRIBLE. They are old and single-paned. In the winter my bedroom window did not keep out the cold wind so I insulated and taped up the window. If you have a sliding glass door then expect your heating efficiency to drop in the cold winter. The sliding doors are big and hard to insulate. This complex was built in the 70's, so expect everything to have a used look.

7) I haven't seen any cockroaches, but one day I came home to find that hundreds of pill bugs had infested my bedroom (and I'm on the second floor). They were everywhere. I also see quite a few centipedes and silverfish in the summer. That is a sign of an older building.

8) I have steered clear of maintenace. My old neighbors told me that some of the maintenace guys were stealing from tenants. I've also heard they sometimes come in unannounced.

Comcast came to install cable in our building. They needed access to the attic area so they CUT THE LOCK on the door to the attic. I contacted the office about the broken lock laying on the floor and it took them 3 weeks to replace it.

There is an underground watering system for the lawns. In front of my building there is a problem and water seeps up creating a constant giant mud puddle. The problem was reported in the Fall. It is Spring now and it hasn't been fixed.

9) The complex is full of crappy vehicles. In an average drive through you will see 3-4 cars with flat tires. Many people disregard stop signs and drive too fast. People block the road with U-Hauls and trailers.

10) Just tonight there was a bad thunderstorm. Three decorative archways above doors to our building came down. At another building a piece of roof flew off and crushed two vehicles. A downstairs neighbor reported leaking in his bedroom.

I honestly could not have said this better. My brother lives there and when my husband and I were looking to move into the area, he STRONGLY advised against us living there. He will not be renewing his lease in the fall.
