I lived in Lake Piedmont for two years. Overall I was very satisfied. My roommate and I got a nice 10% student discount and all of the staff were very friendly, other than the pool monitor who always seemed to be in a bad mood. The walk-through when we moved out was even pleasant.
I lived pretty close to the Leasing Office, however, which I noticed is much nicer than the area in the back. My two-bedroom apartment was tiny yet opened up nicely- the strangest thing was that there was no bathroom access unless you went through one of the two bedrooms!
When you walk in, there are two nice "window" ledges separating the living room from the dining area that we hung plants from which was nice. On a sunny day the living room/dining room/kitchen areas shined when you walked in!
Although my apartment was right next to the highway, the noise wasn't bad. I did have to insulate my windows though, as the draft was bad in the wintertime. I loved my closet, although my roommate was not thrilled to find a water heater in his.
A strange thing was the heat- although I was surrounded by apartments and lived upstairs, our heating bill (its all electric) soared as much as $140 some months with us using minimal amounts of electricity. Even with the heat on it was still cold, so yeah, rather drafty. (Especially the day the heat went out, but they did repair that rather quickly.) I had IPL check the meter to make sure it wasn't broken, but no one could explain our abnormally high bill (in the summer it was about $30).
Parking was a pain, but mostly due to the residents. My roommate, then-fiance, and my cars all had been dented from some moron slamming their door open too fast- of course, no note to even apologize. I also found some marks on my hood and learned that some of the residents by the building I parked near were randomly sitting on cars as they hung out at night!!! I learned to not park near sidewalks after that.
The mailboxes are very inconvienent to get to. However, the heated pool was wonderful- although the spa worked ONCE the entire time I was there (believe me, I checked often- even calling every week)! The workout room is also pretty good.
Maintenance was usually fair, except for my one main complaint. The blinds broke in my front window (as in, looking from the balcony into my apartment) one morning as I was sitting eating breakfast. I immediately called the office and informed them I needed those fixed immediately- I considered it a safety as well as privacy hazard. I also mentioned that I was leaving for a week vacation the next day. After waiting around and calling back I kept being assurred someone would come but never did- when I called Emergency Maintance because no one had came, they gave me an attitude saying he wasn't driving out there to fix my blinds and I just had to wait. I had to leave for my vacation with no blinds on my window and my roommate was gone as well- so I had to pay someone to housesit, who informed me they came after a couple of days!
I was blessed that no one broke in then or thereafter, but what an ordeal. Still, for two years it was overly pleasant- my neighbors were decent and taught me some Spanish.
