A Very Nice Place

I have used apartmentratings.com to find my last two apartment communities, Autumn Chase and North Haven, so I really trust this site and wanted to offer some insight on North Haven. After living here a year, I feel like I can provide an accurate view of the pros and cons of living here.
I was shocked to read that one reviewer mentioned sex acts in the hallways here. That may have been an isolated event, but trust me, this isn t the type of place where sex acts run rampant. This community mainly has a corporate, industrial (because of the gravel pits across the road) feel. It is somewhat sterile, but the buildings and grounds are maintained nicely. (However, I will say that the hallway is my building is often dirty and needs a good cleaning.) As far as my individual apartment, it is extremely nice, although somewhat small for the price ($675/month for a one bedroom). I do have washer and dryer hookups (which I love and haven t been able to find in many one-bedroom apartments), and other small details make the apartment beautiful (like textured walls and cream paint, an archway, and nice flooring). Overall, it s been quiet, barring a small amount of noise from the apartment over me. (Note: Reviewers have mentioned loud partying. I have never heard any. The community is mostly young residents, but aside from a couple of yells and car squeals, it s been really peaceful. Also, as far as the gravel pit mining goes, this isn't too terribly loud. You WILL hear the noise of the gravel trucks backing up at all hours, though.) A drawback to these apartments are the extremely small, screened-in porches. (If you re like me, you ll never want to sit out there because it feels like a closet.)
FYI: Electricity charges for a one-bedroom range from $55 to $160/month and water averages about $15 to $20/month.
As far as maintenance goes, I d say it s been okay. Upon my first inspection of the place (prior to move in), I found a huge water stain on my kitchen ceiling and hall closet. I mentioned it to the staff immediately, and they told me the previous resident hadn t mentioned the incident to them. This issue was only partially addressed when I actually moved in. The water wasn t leaking anymore, but the water stains were still apparent. After I called maintenance, they came and re-painted the area within a week. Also, when I first moved into the apartment, I noticed that black mold in my shower had just been caulked over instead of removed (which seemed lazy for a luxury property). After lots of scrubbing, it still looks disgusting. In another situation, I requested that the door to my patio be fixed and I returned to a fair amount of wood shavings on the carpet. Maintenance has been pretty quick to address my other complaints (my air conditioner broke, a door wasn t level, etc.), but they have never left notes that they were there, which I ve never experienced before.
Outside the apartment, I feel very safe. There is plenty of parking, and I was always able to park just outside my building. The pool is very nice (it overlooks the community lake) and the workout facility is pretty good (the only drawback is that it doesn t have a ton of equipment).
As far as the office staff goes, I had a lot of problems when I moved in. I had originally applied to the community a year before I moved in, and I was told the leasing staff would allow that security deposit (half the total amount) to transfer. They also promised me the $675/month fee. However, a few weeks before I was scheduled to move in, I happened to call the office with a question and was told my promised apartment was no longer available (that the resident had an emergency situation and needed to stay). This pushed my moving date back 5 weeks, and would have forced most others to find another apartment complex to live in. When I finally did move in, my lease was charging me $695/month and the security deposit amount I paid wasn t waived. I got the situation figured out, but it was a hassle. Also, when I moved in, the lock on my storage unit (inconveniently located in the first floor hallway) was broken and not fixed for a few weeks. I do want to say the office staff seems to have changed since then, and the people working there now are extremely nice and helpful.
Overall, I ve been really happy here. I m leaving just to rent for less money.
