Worst Apartment Complex on North Side

First, let me just say that I have lived in the following Indianapolis apartment communities:
The Lakes
River Road
The Gables / Residence at White River
River Crossing
I can say with full confidence that River Road is the biggest dump in Indianapolis outside of the true ghetto neighborhoods (i.e. 38th and Washington Streets). How this hole has developed on Indy's North Side is beyond me.
Here are the problems I had before I moved out after 4.5 months to go back to the Lakes:
1. Ants - WOW. Ants everywhere in my building. The leasing office was beyond unhelpful about it, too. I had ants in the sink, the bathroom, the living room, basically in and around all floor boards, and found them under my sink as well. I moved out after discovering ants on my tooth brush. The leasing office finally admitted that the building had rotted away underneath and it was going to take several months to resolve - what did they offer' ONE MONTH'S REDUCED RENT. Embarassing for them as a business. Truly embarassing. As a lawyer, fortunately I knew all about implied warranties and the breach thereof, such that I could break my lease without having to even negotiate or debate it any further. It was unsafe to live in with the ant problem - this was one of the buildings that faced the man-made lake behind the complex that features the homes nestled around it.
2. Noise - stereos blasting - mostly latino music, at all hours of the night and early morning.
3. Lights - most of the exterior lights throughout the complex were broken. During the 4.5 months I lived there, they weren't fixed.
4. Safety - some have said they knew River Road to be safe when they lived there. Well, newsflash, River Road had a stabbing and a mugging in '05. Several break-ins in '06 as well. If you do a sex offender registry search, you'll find at least 7-10 living IN RIVER ROAD. No single female or single mother with small children should live here if they can avoid it.
I was in Indianapolis for the year, and wanted something simple to allow me to save a few dollars before I moved. I'll never make that mistake again. There are certain things that you truly get what you pay for, and an apartment is one of them.

I don't know if you will read this singleguy2005 since it is a couple years since you wrote the review, but we could use you help. Could you clarify how you were able break your lease? I feel completely unsafe here and would love to leave, but I don't have the money to break my lease. I have a two year old daughter with a life-threatening illness, and find that this complex is just not clean or safe enough for her. I could use your help! You can reply to my post under "not the best...not the worst". Thanks
