Never again

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004

I lived in Stanford court for 2 years, the first year I was unhappy but it was bearable and I was unable to afford moving costs so I stayed another year. The first year my refrigerator went out once and the maintenance told me it would most likely go out again but I was refused a replacement until it did go out again, unfortunately for me that was the day after I went grocery shopping and had to throw away everything. I had to threaten not to resign to get a replacement and was given no compensation for the food I lost either time this happened. The second year my water heater went out and the maintenance men didn't even know where in the apartment it was located but did fix it once they found it, only for it to go out 2 more times before bursting and flooding my apartment, even though I insisted after the second time it went out that they replace it. The finish on the bathtub had lines in it where it appeared someone had scoured it with steel wool or something similar and would never come clean so they sent someone out to "refinish" it which is a nice way of saying they painted my bathtub, within a week it was peeling up whenever I would use the tub or shower and was never fixed for the duration I lived there. We had 1 communal washer and dryer for 8 apartments which made it difficult to find it available and even when they were, they would often break and take several days to a week to be fixed even if they were sitting full of water with your clothes in them. I also noticed another comment on here about free bug control, it's a good thing they offer that because I have never seen a place so overrun with critters, not roaches but centipedes, the gray pill bugs, spiders and some sort of flying ant looking things that invaded my kitchen and looked like what I've heard termites described to be. My car was chipping paint, it had been since before I moved in there and miraculously the second year, middle of winter with the wind whipping around they put a tow sticker on my window. When I called and asked what was going on they said it was because of the paint flakes, and as calm as I could be I recited to her what it said in my lease, only that vehicles must have current plates and be mobile, nothing about the appearance of the car which ran fine and was driven daily. After hearing this she then said, well you'll have to rent a garage or we'll evict you. After spending an entire day on the phone with the management company they eventually called the manager and settled with her on leaving the situation alone. There were people in our building that would sit right outside our bedroom window and listen to loud music until 2 am, would work on their cars in the parking lot on a weekly basis (which was clearly forbidden in the lease) and would stand out there drinking alcohol and dumping the bottles and cans on the lawn and in the bushes in front of my unit and would also come in with car grease on their fingers and draw on the hallway walls and write stuff, I'm a pretty tolerant person but after all this I complained only to be told they would not do anything about this. Considering they threatened to evict me over paint chips I considered this pretty ridiculous that they wouldn't even talk to the tenant causing the problems. Finally after 2 years of this I moved out only for them to keep my entire deposit and charge me an additional $180 approximately. Some of those charges were within reason but were minor ones and when I questioned the charges for painting they said it was because I smoked, which it was not ever said when I moved in that it was a problem nor did I ever expect an apartment complex to charge their tenants for a duty they are obligated to do anyhow. Also there was a large rust spot inside one of the closets where I had a toolbox sitting and when the water heater burst and flooded I did not realize had gotten that far and explained to the manager this upon moving out that it was not my fault and if the water heater had been replaced when it should have been that it would never have happened, I cleaned the carpets twice while I lived there, I had no pets and consider myself to be an average person who cleans up any spills and tries to maintain the look of my place so there was what I would consider to be only average wear and tear that happens after 2 years but I was also charged for new carpeting because they said it had to be replaced. I asked for a re-evalution of the apartment conditions from the management company telling them I did not believe these charges to be reasonable and was told I could either pay it or be taken to court. I have since then rented other places and have had good and bad experiences but nothing near the horrible nightmare of Stanford Court. I would never ever rent an apartment from Sexton Companies again because of this and I can only hope to warn others as to my experiences so they don't have to go through the same things I did.
