Good Experience

I have lived at Williamsburg North for several months and have had a positive experience thus far. I question some of the other reviewers, as their arguments are not well articulated. I tend not to trust reviews where the reviewer struggles even to make a simple, coherent statement beyond, "this place sucks."
After looking at a dozen or so apartments in February '09 and scouring sites like this one, I tried Williamsburg North on a whim, and it turned out to be the best option in terms of price and amenities. Rent is cheap with most utilities included--you only pay for electric which is just lights, AC, and appliances. Your stove top, oven, and heat are all gas, which WN pays for. No other nearby 1br apartments I toured had as much storage as my current apartment -- two LARGE closets in the bedroom, a shelved closet in the hallway, and a closet with hanging bar in the living room. The bathroom is large with a long countertop and cabinet storage underneath. The space was a big selling point for me, but yet it is not too much space for 1 person.
It is certainly an older apartment--the kitchen cabinets are dated (although there are a lot of them for storage), the kitchen appliances are old and can be a pain to cook with, and the thermostat doesn't work properly--but it is not that big of a deal to me given the good price. The girls in the office have always been helpful and maintenance has responded quickly to my requests, so if the appliance issues were really a bother, I could always mention it.
As for crime, I have not experienced or heard of any problems (*knock on wood*), other than a recent arrest outside of my building. I regularly check the City of Indianapolis' crime database for the hell of it, and this complex is no worse (it is actually a lot better) than other nearby apartment complexes. I believe the aforementioned arrest was for someone wanted on warrant for a non-violent crime, and car/apartment break-ins happen in even the nicest of areas. The entry door to my apartment is thin--the cheap, hollow doors used after the 70s, and I am used to having a good solid door. So, no, I don't feel as protected as I would like, but I tend to be on guard no matter my location. Still, if someone really wanted to break in, then I have no doubt they could and would, but I feel the same goes for any apartment. My primary complaint with security in the complex is with the assigned parking spaces having your building number and apartment letter on it. Sure, the assigned spots are nice, but someone wasn't thinking when they made it easy for all to see which apartment's tenants are home and which aren't. They should be assigned numbers and each tenant knows their number. I was told management was considering a change... we'll see.
As for the other residents, I suppose I am fortunate in that my neighbors aren't annoying or loud. Sure, it is clear that the complex is primarily made up of lower-income families, but I wouldn't go as far to say that it is "ghetto" as a previous reviewer stated. Obviously, that reviewer has never lived in a big city with actual large impoverished, minority areas. And I don't think it matters where your apartment is, you always risk getting loud, obnoxious neighbors. There are indeed a lot of kids and dogs, both of which typically annoy me. Most of the dogs aren't yappy and are well-trained or kept indoors. The kids are fairly respectful--but I am not home enough for them to annoy me either.
All in all, I am pleased. Not sure if I will renew my lease here, but if I choose not to, it won't be a result of bad experiences with Williamsburg North.
