Don't even try to get your deposit back

I lived in Portledge Commons for 3.5 years and living there was wonderful. The maintenance staff was great and the apartments are lovely. However, dealing with the management was a hassle. They lost our first form regarding our pet and the paperwork regarding the pet deposit. With this missing they never questioned why I was paying pet rent for 2 years! Upon moving out, it got even worse. I left the apartment in move in condition and I lost my entire deposit and owed a significant amount of money. They also did not even send the bill to the forwarding address that I left them, instead sending it to the old apartment number that they were aware I did not live in anymore. It was a terrible experience and even though I enjoyed living there, I would never recommend it to anyone else after all of the problems I experienced upon moving out. If you feel like throwing your deposit away then go ahead and move right in.

I see nothing has changed from when I moved out of there in July 2004. I had to fight to get my deposit- they sent me a bill charging me for utilities pastmy move out date (I had been accomodating and moved out earlier so that they would have ample time to get it ready for the next tenants, but they didn't change the lease ending date in the computer), and said that their cleaners said there was "pet hair" in the apt and I did not pay for a pet to be in there- BECAUSE THERE WASNT ONE IN THERE!!! I hate cats and don't like dogs enough to want one of my own. They said that the apt wasn't cleaned- which I don't understand because between my mom and my sister, even the ceiling fan and blinds got dusted! It was a 2 month duel w/them. I did not even get a repsonse from the property manager until I reported them to the BBB.
Overall, the apartment was a joy. I LOVED IT. I have yet to find one as good since (I had to relocate to NW Indiana). But I do agree with this poster- you will have to fight through hell and high water to get your deposit. I would recommend having someone of the staff do a walk through before you move out- but of course, they don't want to do that. I asked... "No, it's no necessary" is what I was told. Obviously, it is...
