Renter Beware!

We lived in this community for 5 years. 5 years! That is extremely long term in comparison to the average tenancy. We lived there through several maintenance, office, and management staff changes. The good people wouldn't stay. As with any apartment complex there were bad tenants but fortunately they didn't seem to last long. Our problem was with management. We lived there for 5 years and had signed another 2 year lease. One month later a new manager was brought in. At the same time I lost my job. The rent is due on the 1st of the month and there is no grace period. If your rent check is not deposited in their bank in Ohio by the 1st, you are late. After I lost my job I went to talk with the manager and try to work something out on the rent. She declined to assist. On the 6th of the month (5 days late) we were served with a notice to appear for eviction proceedings. We raised most of the rent money by our court date two days later and our Church helped us with the final $100. I met Abby the manager in the courthouse the morning of our hearing and offered her payment for the rent. She refused to accept the $100 check from our Church. This is a large Catholic Church and there is no question of the availability of funds on a $100 check but she refused to accept it. I was forced to ask for a hearing and was informed by the clerk that these cases are very cut & dried and we either paid the rent and get to stay, or we didn't and we would be evicted. I went in the hearing and Abby accused us of being late on our rent 23 times and being a nuisance to the community. She could not document any of these allegations. I had canceled checks for every single month of rent. She again refused to accept the rent from me when it was offered to her again in front of the Judge. She then accused me of threatening one of the office staff, Rosemary, with a firearm. Again she was unable to document any of this and could offer the Judge no explanation as to why the Police were never involved, eviction proceedings were never started, nor why they renewed our lease twice after the alleged incident. I left the hearing believing that the Clerk was correct and it was cut & dried, we would be evicted. We found a new place to move and left a few days after the hearing. The day we were moving we received a copy of the judgment in the mail. The Court sided with us! Based on the language in the lease he found that Abby was in violation of the agreement. It also stated that because she refused to accept my rent payment that they no longer had a right to collect it. A few weeks after we moved we received a bill for over $12,000! They want us to pay for the remainder of the two year lease even though they rented our apartment to a new tenant less than two weeks after we moved. Since she refused our rent and we were no longer liable for that month, combined with a new tenant moving in in the same calendar month that we left, I don't owe any rent. The only charges they can make stick are for 2 vertical blind slats, two light bulbs, and two stove drip pans.....a total of $36. Over two years later we are still fighting them and the succession of collection agencies they throw at us to settle this account. To summarize, the complex has a large number of problem tenants and a management staff that pursues the wrong ones. Five plus years of rent paid, not a single complaint against us, and they can't give me 7 days worth of compassion before attempting to throw me, my wife, and our 5 year old daughter out in the street. Look elsewhere if searching for a new home.

this isn't very helpful because no review is posted, just looks to me like someone got angry and decided to post something bad, with nothing to back it up with. The site shouldn't allow that.
