MERRILLVILLE | A 20-year-old Merrillville man, angered after he was robbed at gunpoint and hit with a gun, got into his car and chased after his two assailants late Wednesday, police said.

The victim, who chased after the pair for several miles before giving up, got close enough to the getaway car to write down the license-plate number, which he later provided to police, Merrillville Police Operations Cmdr. Lance Huish said.

Huish said the plate number already has been helpful in the case.

"We already have the identity of one of the two men," Huish said.

He said detectives who were investigating the case Thursday interviewed the mother of the identified man and arrested her on an outstanding warrant in an unrelated case.

The robbery victim told police the two men approached him as he was walking into his apartment at Summerwood, 2033 W. 85th Ave., at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

One of the two men pulled a gun and robbed the victim of his cell phone and $200 in cash, police said. The other man, who also had a gun, hit the victim before the pair of suspects fled the scene, Huish said.

Huish said the victim wasn't injured seriously enough to require medical treatment.
