Sugarbush can be a pretty nice place...if you don't have problems. I've lived here a while, going my third lease. My overall experience has me resigning. I've seen 3 changes in management, but have been pretty disappointed in the most recent change.
The maintenance staff is friendly, pretty knowledgeable, and usually quick to respond if they are given backing from management. I've had some major appliances, faulty, replaced in a decent amount of time, without too much hassle. Cheers. However, there have been some issues they have not responded very quickly to, particularly since change in management.
Being that the area is nicely wooded, there are wild animals that live in the area (raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, possum, etc). Cool, but not when they get in the building. When/if they get into the building or your apartment, management, in my opinion, has a responsibility to address the issue immediatly; however, they were not very keen to address these issues in a timely manor. I am not the only one that has had to deal with this. Way too much time and effort on my part to express the need for speed to address my particular issue. Really got burned on this.
I'm a non smoker. Perhaps the insulation/construction wasn't very tight, so I get some wafting from smokers below. But I guess that's life in the city.
I'll agree with other comments, that parking can sometimes be challenging, as it is mostly free for all, unassigned, unless you pay premium. But when isnt parking a challenge'
When i moved here i was really impressed with the response to my issues. Times and management change; it seems now I have to really haggle and harass for everything, more than I did before. To my knowledge, Sugarbush is no longer an AIMCO property (nationwide company), so maybe that's some of the issue there (local oversight).
Based on my personal experiences, as well as those I have heard from others, there has been some confusion in the front office. Again, echoing comments posted from others. Response to service calls, mistakes in leases, billing, etc. Stupid things that I did not have a problem with before, but I feel I'm paying enough in rent that there should not be a problem with.
I do like it here, the setting, the location, the pool, the apartment layout. Balconies are nice. Again, maintenance response can be pretty decent with many issues; Matt is a particularly good guy on staff. But they need the support and direction from management, apparently. The pool is pretty decent. Clean and well kept, considering all the people that use it. A mix of younger and older singles and couples. But the change in management, as of summer 06 has yet to be a positive experience for me and some other residents I know of. With the new staff hopefully now getting their bearings, I'm hopeful that will change.
I think the reviews I've read thus far are a pretty good indication of what to expect. Nothing stealer across the board, some issues, but it can be a nice place. Much better than some. Muncie, overall, should expect more than slums and slum lords, but being asked to pay ridiculously for something "acceptable" isn't right either.
Price isn't too bad, but I think Sugarbush should be mindful with how much they raise the rent though in the future, and stay close to the market. Particularly since there is nothing constantly stellar here (yet) to warrant such a premium.
Be human and be understanding, but haggle and harass for everything if needed and not addressed within reason. This can be a decent place to live, as you are paying for that privilege and service.
