Think before you rent here

I moved here last year from Chicago because I wanted to be closer to my family and friends. I decided to move into the complex because it was the best deal that allowed me to move in with a pet.
Much to my dismay, I have had nothing but problems since the day I moved in. Right after I moved in, my car was broken into. Then I had many maintenance issues with the place. I had several links from my sinks to under the cabinets, to in the ceiling in my bathroom from the apartment above mine. When I moved in, I expected to have actually clean carpets, but instead I found that I couldn't even walk across my carpet with socks on without them turning black. That problem did not get better until I actually took the time to shampoo my carpets. It took three times to get it to where it should have been when I moved in. Then when spring came, I noticed that I had a huge problem with flying ants that were coming in from my furnace room into my bedroom. I had to duck tape my furnace door just to keep them from coming in. If I was just talking about a few bugs, it wouldn't be a problem, but this was more like hundreds. I showed the apartment complex and all they did was have someone come out to spray. I am fearful for when they come back this spring because I know they will.
I find that I have to close my bathroom door at night and my closet door in my bedroom to lessen the noise coming from the neighboring apartment and their late night "conversations" but more like yelling and screaming.
As far as the surrounding neighbors, I have been cussed at by many of the kids in the neighborhood while minding my own business and witnessed rocks being thrown at many of the cars in the parking lot (including my own). I can truly say through some of the experiences that I have had that I felt a lot safer in my apartment in Chicago than I have here.
When my lease comes to an end, I am definitely moving from here as soon as I can. I would have broken my lease but I didn't want to pay the $750. I don't recommend living here if you would like a nice, peaceful community to live in.
On some positive notes, the maintenance staff has been really great in terms of response time on maintenance requests, even though not everything gets fixed the first time you call. The office ladies have been really great, understanding and easy to work with. My main complaints are the condition of the apartments and the other residents. Maybe eventually the complex will consider going away from Section 8, and raising their rates to attract better tennants (not that everyone is bad, but the majority).

We had the same problem with "flying ants". Google it, and you'll find they're not "ants" (these bugs don't have segmented bodies and they show no interest in human food or sugar, etc.), but I think the complex doesn't want to pay to get rid of what only swarms for a month or two every spring. The office is very good at responding to noise complaints, and bad neighbors can end up evicted after 6 or 12 official complaints are made, but more bad neighbors move in. The local police are very helpful, too, but you have to call twice because the first time they blow you off (the police more often than not don't take non-emergency calls from a poor neighborhood seriously). Don't bother trying to contact the "courtesy officer"; he's never available. People there are trying to win the Twit Of The Year award by blasting their subwoofers every time they drive in or out - they think it's their world, the rest of us just live in it. I realize this is just part and parcel of living in a poor area... we lived there trying to save money to make a larger down payment on a mortgage. I always thought that's why everyone lived in an apartment - young couples trying to save money for a real house; but there are actually people raising children here! When we moved, we forever unable to feel sorry for poor people. They're just not nice. We're experienced. Also, when you move out, make sure you know the number to legal aid, because maintenance will make a note of any little scratch or anything at all that wasn't the same when you moved in and try to charge you hundreds of dollars to repair it. A spot on the rug the size of a quarter can cost 50 bucks, a larger spot and they have to replace the whole thing, 300 dollars or more. If the cabinets have any wear and tear, they will claim the whole thing has to be replaced and try to charge you for it. So, make sure legal aid is on speed dial.

I agree that the place needs to do away with Section 8 and the like. We moved here from Iowa and had 2 bikes stolen >$300.00 each and are not used to this kind of 'city life'. We were encouraged to get renters insurance in the future. This was also advised in the monthly newsletter, though the officer who lives here and patrols the place named a person probably responsible for the theft as the idividual walked behind my husband and the officer at the time a report was being made.

I, too, live in Indian Springs ... moving in a month. Generally, everything is half ass and the residents are awful: vandalism, elementary-aged kids running around at all hours, drugs, alcohol, screaming, fighting ... you name it. the after hours security is a joke, the local police arrive faster than the on-site security when i've called them ... over 4 times in a year about drug use and vandalism. RUN RUN RUN FOR YOUR LIFE !!

I just wanted to say that NOT everyone on section 8 or poor people are the problem. I am a full time student now, but when I moved here i worked full-time and I have a young son. I moved here because the gas prices at the house that I lived in was unbearable. I now recieve section 8 and I am not a bad person nor is my son. But the few who are the trouble is the problem not everyone's economic level. I have been victim to every crime that was noted on these complaints and I am just fair enough to say its not everyone that is poor. But I definityly agree that the area and the apartments definitly are in dire need of upgrading. The company needs to do a thorough check on the people they are letting move in. Criminals come in all shapes, sizes, and economic level. And checking with prior landlords and looking at reasons and how they left prior housing should be the things that determine acceptance or not. I had a hard time getting in here 4 years ago, and I don't have real bad credit or bad history criminally or otherwise. But they are not as careful with others as they were with me or things wouldn't be so bad. But, I'd like to finish with that there are just as many mean and rude people that aren't poor. So, I happen to be one of the poor people and I don't want the people who left messages about all poor people to feel sorry for me, because I happen to feel sorry for you for letting a few bad people make you so prejudiced and mean to all poor people. I too am trying to move and I hope and pray for the best for everyone including the mean people that live out here and the ones who have left these messages. There is always just as many good things to say about any situation as there are bad ones, it just takes really shallow people to concentrate on the bad ones... So in reality who all are really the bad people. There are bad things I could go on about but all in all there are just as many good ones that I can say about my time here. Like any situation its what you make it..

You didn't state any good things though. You basically defended people who live on section 8 and there is nothing wrong with that if that is what one needs in order to stay a float for a while...I currently live in Castle Point and am thinking about moving to Indian Springs because of the Town Home option and built in W/D hookup. Based off of what I have read I think I will pass on IS...I don't think the people who wrote the comments are prejudice or mean, I think they were just stating the obvious and their experience as it pertains to IS. I don't think grigori's assumption of ALL poor people not being nice is fair but then again I don't know what he experienced out there. Based off of all of your comments this place seems like it has nice looking apartments that were placed in the ghetto or something. Thanks for all of the comments, the helped a lot!
