If you have a dog and need to get downtown or to ND it is fine

It is not perfect, but it was a good place to live most of the time.

I lived here for three years and had great neighbors and liked the fact that people in my section would watch out for each other on vacations and other times of the year. We all had dogs or pets and came to Riverside for the same reason - the pet policy.

Large dogs welcome! That was the reason I moved here. I had a large dog and needed a place that would take my pet and not charge me an arm and a leg. I also wanted a first floor unit with an outside entrance. I was happy with this. The bike path on Riverside is better every year and now extends up to Cleveland Ave. This is a wonderful feature in the summer and winter (when the city clears the snow). I really loved walking the dog along the riverside.

When I signed up I received a free month of rent plus a $100 gift card from rent dot com and when I renewed I received a discount and a credit from the first month s rent. I wish they had kept up these incentives for renewals for residents with good credit. I moved from New Jersey where I was paying $1300 in 2003 for a town house with no washer/dryer and with appliances from the 1970s in one of the most expensive cities in the USA. My rent was never more than $718 including water and garbage (something I wish they would get rid of) and my apartment was huge. I thought the rent was cheap and my utilities were not too bad.

The walls in my unit were thick. I never heard the people upstairs or across the hall unless they were in the shared corridor.

Now if I did not have a large breed dog I might have rented somewhere else to be sure, but if you have dogs, want a washer and dryer in your unit, and pretty safe neighbors (all of my neighbors were ND and IUSB graduate students and professors) this place is ok.

Now, I had a lot of things go wrong and agree that the repair staff was quite bad in 2006-2007 (often had to call 2-3 times to get them to do anything right), but they have a guy there now named Kevin and he is very helpful. He always did as much as he could and even repaired things that the other repair men actually improperly installed. If they gave out holiday bonuses he deserves a big one!

Parking can be tough. I think each apartment should have a numbered spot and all the 2nd and 3rd cars should have to park in the back. This got on my nerves to say the least especially when some people were parking work trucks and extra cars in the front all the time. I also wished there were more secure modern garages, but I never rented one. Now, when it was "bad" I had to park in the back which was only a short walk really and the lot was lit.

It was always my view that the owners in Chicago were cheap and this was the main reason for the failure on the part of the staff to stick around or for the failure to modernize doors, windows, appliances, etc., but I had a new fridge, a new washer and dryer in 2006.

I thought it was a good place to live. It was not the Ritz to be sure, but with the river bike and walking path, proximity to ND and downtown it was ok all in all - most of the time I did not need a car because I could walk or ride the bike to ND, Martin's, CVS, or downtown.
