Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2008
If you are looking to live at McCormick, immediately stop thinking about it and consider another apartment complex. I have lived here for two years now and while the first half of my year here wasn't so bad, the rest of my leasing period has been COMPLETE HELL. Ever since the new management took over, I feel like I have been living in prison. I'll admit that the actual apartments themselves are nice, but the living conditions resemble that of a third world country. Here are just some of the problems I have had since I moved here.
1.) Cable Issues: If you want to watch your favorite show, its hit or miss if you will actually be able to watch it. I can't remember a time where we have had quality cable service for a week straight. Channels either freeze, lose picture or lose sound on a regular basis and stay like that for several days and even up to a week at times. Oh, don't even try to call the office or the cable provider because they have absolutely NO CLUE about customer service or how to deal with people. There is no excuse for the ongoing problems with the cable service.
2.) Internet Problems: Similar to the cable problem, the internet service here is just as bad. Several times a day the internet simply freezes and you lose access for 2-3 minutes at a time. Sure, it comes back on eventually, but its very very annoying when you're trying to get something done on a timeframe.
3.) Excessive Noise: There are always parties going on in one building or another and if you complain to the office, don't expect anything to happen. I personally know a few people who have complained to the management about the noise and the very next night the same people have their music blasting. Even if the police are called, it still happens every weekend and no one seems to care.
4.) RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL Management: I can't even write enough to explain how rude and unprofessional the management is. There are a few nice workers in the office, but for every nice office worker, there are five rude ones. They will do and say ANYTHING they can to get you to sign a lease but as soon as you sign that paper you will have become nothing but a number to them and you will be treated as such. All I have to say is just avoid McCormick altogether and you won't have a problem.
5.) Electricity: Your electricity bill will be high, you can count on that. Its not that the electric company is gouging you, its because the window seal usually has gaps in them and lets a constant draft in. Don't try to get maintenance to fix it because it will take them about a year to get to you.
6.) Maintenance: Takes a while to get something fixed. That's all you need to know.
7.) Safety Issues: If there is a bad snow, you're going to need snow shoes if you walk to the bus stop. Even if you're just walking to your car, you need to be extra careful because the sidewalks are never salted until about a week AFTER all the snow is starting to melt. Also, a few months ago the hallway lights went out outside of my apartment and I had to get out my night vision goggles to walk down the stairs because I didn't want to fall and break my neck.
8.) Inconsistent Fines: A friend of mine left a garbage bag outside of their apartment for about an hour while they were cleaning their apartment. During that hour, one of the office workers had came around and saw the bag outside and fined their apartment. As I write this, two of my neighbors have left trash bags outside of their apartments last week and nothing has been done about this. Every weekend they leave trash bags in the hallway and they really start to smell horrible. Where is the consistency''
9.) Parking: Don't have your friends or family come to your apartment because they will probably get towed. One of the visitor lots is clearly labeled, but the back visitor parking spaces are not marked and the management says it isn't their responsibility to mark the lots, everyone is just supposed to magically know where to park.
Well that's all I have. If you have read this far I hope you're not seriously considering McCormick Place. If you still are considering it, I wish you the best of luck on your year-long journey through the depths of the underworld.
