Corrupt Management, Overpriced, Could Care Less about Comfort and Wellbeing of Residents

First of all this place is highly overpriced. The buildings are at least 30 years old. A notice about the possible presence of lead-based paint is issued to you when you move in, thus given the completely inadequate level of upkeep (not uncommon to see chipping paint) I would not certainly not recommend this place to anyone with small children. When I moved in, I discovered I had no hot water. It took more than two weeks to finally get a permanent fix to this problem. The contractors had apparently inproperly installed the water heater and caused it to burn out, however for more than a week I was told by the management to try "flipping the breakers" although I repeatedly told them I had tried this and it does not work. I was told I was welcome to shower in the public "clubhouse". How much would you be willing to pay for an apartment with no hot water in which you had to walk a block to go to a public restroom to take a shower' I was never offered even an apology for this, though if the management was interested in being an honest business I should have been offered discounted rent for that month in my opinion. The outlets in my bathroom also do not work, although after the response I got with the water issue, I didn't bother to try to fix it. At least I had some working outlets in the apartment and I thus had to do my hair in the kitchen every morning. Every bit of construction in this apartment is cheap and and shoddy. Even my towel rack falls off the wall because it was not properly cemented. It looks as though they hired 15 year olds to do the work. Apparently they changed management halfway through the year and decided to begin all sorts of new construction. I don't know who makes these decisions as to when to start projects, but just before finals week I am listening to constant drilling, hammering, and banging in the hall and outside my apartment. How can anyone study in such an environment' Outside the stone wall that divides the apartments from the parking lot is crumbling with large rocks falling off onto the patio, creating yet again another hazard for children as well as creating debris that one could trip over. Additionally, sound travels very, very well in these apartments, thus you have a feeling of absolutely no privacy. While in the hall I can hear every single word of conversations of my neighbor while she is in her apartment with the door closed. The contractors they hire are the most unprofessional group of people you can imagine. They make excessive noise, talk so loudly it amounts to screaming, and every other word is something you couldn't say on TV (again I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone with children, or anyone who believes that people should have manners and respect for that matter). They claim to have on-site laundry facilities, but actually there are far too few washers and dryers for the number of people in the buildings, thus it is not uncommon for you to probably have to wait until 1 in the morning to put your laundry in. This particularly true since one of the washers was broken and would enter a 7 hour spin cycle which I assume poses a potential hazard as well as wastes tremendous amounts of energy. Lastly, although they take as many liberties as they want with your comfort, they don't exactly have the laid-back standard for your behavior. During December, with finals and the holidays coming up, I was one day late with the rent and was charged $70 for a first time offense. This is simply ridiculous given most people living here are college students and most complexes give you a grace period or at least will ignore a first offense. In any case it cannot be argued that $70 for a late fee is insane. One more comment regarding cost. This excessively high rent does not include utilities, water, or any other services. That you get to pay extra for. Also, they have a contract with only one cable company (no-name one at that) and that is your only option if you want to have a cable connection for television or internet. The service is extremely slow for internet service, much worse than say Comcast, but then again Comcast is prohibited due to the contract with "Western Michigan Internet Service". Avoid this complex at all costs. It would be better to pitch a tent by the Wabash. I'm sure any positive review of this place was written by management members posing as residents. I wouldn't put it past them.
