So... first of all, the management (First Management- and yeah they're jerks) told us that we would get $600 off our first month's rent, but when we went to sign the lease they changed it to be only the same percentage off our first month's pro rated rent (basically cost us $200). Also, the insulation is absolutely ridiculous. One of the bedrooms in our apartment got down to 56 degrees while the living room was close to 80. And if you're wondering, yeah that gets expensive to maintain.
In April they showed our apartment 8 times, including back to back days at one point. I did however finally figure out how to deal with the landlords--if you make them cry, they never call back. So I was expressing my displeasure with having tours in my apartment twice a week, and that was enough to elicit obvious sobbing on the phone. Also the tours aren't just one or two people. Rather you'll have the luxury of having 14 people walking through the apartment, judging your taste.
Then there are the spiders. We are on a ground floor, so maybe upstairs apartments are better. However I have never seen wolf-spiders bigger in my life. Literally the biggest fastest spiders you could ever imagine. The exterminators they send are aparently powerless because we have so many huge spiders. When you live with your girlfriend, this becomes particularly irritating.
Yeah, don't live by the fire department. That is super loud. Not only do you have sirens on many times, but the trucks are constantly humming in the garages. Even though they are alright about keeping the sirens off on the street, being woken up by strobing lights isn't particularly fun, and brings back memories of having nightmares after watching the X-files when I was 6. Don't live on that side of the complex--the shorter walk to campus isn't worth it.
Also, the people above us seem to be engaged in some sort of jump training or something, because our entire ceiling is constantly shaking from this guy's clomping around. I can only assume that he weighs some 250 pounds and is jumping rope in wooden clogs or something--the sound is ridiculous.
Also at one point someone puked in our hallway, such that we had to navigate around puke spots in order to get into our apartment. It looked like perhaps the KU bulimia club had meetings in our hallway, after a wicked binge-fest at Pizza hut. Suffice to say there was lots of puke. And yes, that did stay there for over 2 months. So obviously our neighbors were very considerate.
Finally, the rent is way too high. The bills are expensive. For a 2 br apartment it ended up costing close to $1100 a month. In conclustion, Chase Court blows.
