Meadowbrook seemed like a great place to live. It was close to campus, relatively cheap, and they had availability. If that's all you're looking for in an apartment, then it might work for you. If you're looking for an apartment that looks nice on the inside, has clean carpet, cabinets that are less than 20 years old, and management that is pleasant to work with, then you should live somewhere else.

While the new buildings look nice from the outside, seeing and hearing the construction process unfold literally steps from my door made me not trust the cheap looking material that was involved. My building was quite old, and poorly maintained. When I moved in, my apartment had an awful smoke smell and had several large stains on the carpet. The management denied my request for new carpet, and assured me that the carpet had been cleaned, although it showed no signs of it. When moving out 2 years later, I was forced to pay to have the carpets cleaned for the next resident. Two years after they should have been replaced, management still was not planning to do this.

The leasing agents are friendly, but the receptionist and manager are awful people to have to speak with.

There are enough apartments in Lawrence that you should be able to find one that is well taken care of, and not a shoddy old building or a cheaply made new one.

Sorry about your experience at Meadowbrook but I must say mine is the opposite. Lisa, the receptionist is one of the nicest people I've ever met. She watered plants for me while I was away dealing with a very sick relative. She wouldn't even take anything for it. The apartments are older but many of them are being remodeled. I live in a townhouse that looks brand new but isn't. Roberta has never been anything but nice to me. I've been here for 10 years. If your apartment was in such poor shape when you moved in then you should have photographed it to prevent unreasonable charges upon move out. Your home is what you make of it and the fact that Meadowbrook is almost completely full should tell you the problem was with you not them
