Much Better Than Before

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I lived in Sunrise Village my Senior Year at KU with 4 other people, and I had a great experience overall. It didn't *start off* that well, but that was because of really poor management before we moved in. Basically, we paid our deposit in cash when we signed the lease in February, and it was stolen by an office staffperson. Luckily, I insisted on getting a reciept and I was able to show the new management that I had indeed paid the deposit. They saw the signature on the slip, and informed me that she had already been fired for stealing other people's money, too. So that wasn't a very good start at all. But the quiet neighborhood, access to the bus route, cheap rent, and speedy maintenance changed my mind. The new staff had our apartment debugged, the carpets/walls were really clean when we moved in, and the appliances were pretty new. There are some negative points, though: It's really far away from campus, and the bus only comes every 40 minutes. So sometimes you have to leave an hour early just to get to class on time! That always really frustrated me. Also, while the new management is much better than the old people, they were hardly ever in the office. Sometimes we would go days without being able to catch someone in the office. (DURING office hours!!!!) Maintenance was great, though, because they had a seperate line and they almost always answered, and would fix everything asap. They even came by our apartment before we moved out to do a "walk through," just to make sure we didn't get charged for anything. A for maintenance, B-/C for the office staff. Those are my only negative complaints. Everything else at the apartment was pretty good. If you're looking for someplace where you can live with like 4 or 5 people and get really cheap rent because of it, this is your place.
Also, huge point: We had a husky and a lab in the apartment, both of which weighed over 45 pounds, and they totally allowed it. It's hard to find good apartments that allow big dogs, but they do!! And they say that part of the pet deposit is non-refundable, but we did a fabulous job cleaning (seriously, it took us like 2.5 days of solid cleaning) and they gave us 100% of our deposit back, even the part they weren't supposed to. So if you put in a little elbow grease, even if you have a dog/cat/ferret (all of which we had in the apartment at one time or another), they will give you all the money back at the end of the lease.
Also, it's really nice to have a washer/dryer hookup in the apartment. For just an extra, like, $40 a month you can have them installed. It definitely saved us all money in the long run.
