Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
Upon moving in to Chesapeake in the fall of
2002, we were deeply disappointed upon the move in conditions. We immediately notified
the management with a professional letter. They did respond to most everything. We took pictures and notated everything on the move-in checklist. When we moved out in the fall of 2003, we once again took pictures on the condition of the premises. We also responded within the 30 day limit of our lease ending. We were the "perfect" tenant. Always paid rent on time and never had any complaints made upon us. On Christmas Eve, we received an itemized damage/security deposit statement in the mail. It's exact words were, and I quote, " The carpet in the apartment had to be replaced due to excessive pet urine." They were billing us for $659.00, for the cost of the carpet. We immediately notified management of this error. What error is that you ask' We never, ever owned a pet, nor did we care for one in our stay at this complex. I talked to management twice and they kept telling me they would research the problem. They said , "maybe, we made a mistake." Instead of getting back to us, with in 2-3 weeks, of that first letter, they turned us over to a collection agency. Might I notate that, in that Christmas Eve letter, they told us they would give us 30 days to pay the amount shown, if not they would turn us over for further collection. They did not honor that at all. You all will love this last bit of information. In their statement to us, its direct quote is that "the carpet had to be replaced,..."
Well we peaked in the windows at the end of January, and the carpet (our old carpet) had never been replaced. Not only did they falsify the fact that their was excessive pet urine, but that they had already replaced it and they never have!!!!
Needless to say we are still batteling Chesapeake on this matter. Fox 4 Problem Solvers were in on this matter and were totally on our side. The segment aired on 4 different occasions. The apartment complex is now recanting their "excessive pet urine" theory and now just stating that their were stains throughout the apartment. This is nothing but a complete mess. We do have a lot of good supportive evidence in our favor. We hope that justice will be served. Just please, document everything. It will save you in the end.
