how did you deal with it? i'm dealing with the same issue right now; have to handle it when i get back from iraq. can't wait... it seems like they can take you directly to collections, whereas where i'm from, they have to take you to court first. seems like bs, but they're charging me almost $3k. and they didn't even send me a notice for ten months after i moved out! my wife got it a week after i left for iraq in october; i moved out at the end of december the year prior. weird.
