Good, but a bit pricey for students

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
Located a bit outside of town and a few minutes away from campus (my morning commute to the Old Stadium parking lot takes about 5-10 minutes) I've found it definitely worth the money.
Rent is a bit high, but this includes free expanded basic cable and a washer/dryer. Likewise the kitchen features a dishwasher and is relatively well-sized. Most units contain fireplaces and all feature a patio/porch. There is a pool on the grounds. Bedrooms consist of a nice master bedroom with half bath and walk-in closet and a smaller bedroom.
The apartment complex is located in a relatively quiet area with few students where many of the residents are military and a good number have children. As such it is a welcome relief for those who wish to get away from the keg parties.
Maintenence is superb. In early Fall we noticed that our heating wasn't working and the landlord came by with a space heater for that night and had it fixed by the next day. When the ceiling in the bathroom started leaking the landlord showed up within 10 minutes or so to clear things up. Snow was always shoveled promptly in the parking lot and anytime there was heavy snow I came home to find that my walk had been shoveled (I lived in a ground-floor unit with a sunked entry and concrete front patio area). The landlord was always friendly and accomodating with problems fixed so quickly we often would be afraid to make a call and then go grocery shopping for fear that it would be done by the time we got home.
The downsides are mainly aesthetic. The apartment has a distinctly "built in the 70s" vibe and the flow is poor. Essentially the design is simply a hallway from the front door out through a sliding glass door to the patio with rooms stuck off to the sides. I found the living room to be a decorating nightmare with very few options. As well the apartment can be rather dark with no ceiling lighting in the living room and lighting restricted to the glass sliding door to the patio, one each in bedrooms, and two in the kitchen. Lights are frequently needed during the day in various parts of the house.
As well I found that our particular unit could be a bit cold at times and suspect that there are a number of drafts. This depends, of course, on the individual unit.
After living here for a year I'm going to continue to do so and would highly reccomend it to anyone else looking for a two-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. I have yet to find a better place.
