middle-range, works fine if you're tolerant

We lived on the North edge, Building 6536. It was a two-bedroom, two-bath. Carpet, walls, floors, etc was all in excellent condition [may have been new carpet]. Deck was stable but sagging badly [it dropped about 8" in height from the edge of the building to the edge of the deck]. Parking here was atrocious, but this was solely due to one of our neighbors [--------, surprise surprise], who regularly parked between 4 and 13 cars [for one apartment!] in the lot. In our lot, there were 3 buildings, each containing 4 apartments. 12 apartments, and maybe 8 unreserved spots dedicated for them. There were times when I had nowhere to park within 2-3 blocks of my apartment. We made official complaints at least 5 times about these neighbors, but nothing was ever done. At least 3 of our other neighbors moved out in this period, and I know some of the others also made complaints about these neighbors.

Noise was usually fairly quiet. One of our neighbors had a large dog that would occasionally get excited over a squirrel or something when out for a walk, but that usually didn't last for more than a minute or so. The Mexican neighbors, however, did pose a problem. In addition to their "rice rockets" [read: mid-90's Honda Civic with a fart pipe, giant wing, horrific paint job, and absolutely nothing done to the engines], they apparently thought it was funny to set off other peoples' car alarms. A lot.

As for upkeep, as we were on the very back end of the property, we didn't see much. The local pool was not well maintained, the tennis courts weren't new in any sense. Grass was cut regularly, no weed problems. Sidewalks were fine, parking lots seemed to breed potholes [this may have also been somewhat due to poor drainage in that area, leading to standing water].

Staff was a split. The clubhouse staff is absolutely excellent. Knowledgeable, friendly, informative, always available, and always remembered who I was. They were one of the main reasons I chose Cedar Crest, just head and shoulders [and probably torso too] above anywhere else I looked. Maintenance staff, on the other hand, could have used improvement. Granted, from what I know, there's 3 maintenance employees who are responsible for a bit over 500 apartments, so they're obviously a bit stretched. They were a little too formulaic for my taste. "Oh, your AC isn't working ' I'll replace the air filter for you. Then I'll be busy for the next week." Electrical power was also an issue. My roommates and I were heavy users [we currently have 9 computers in use, and another 4-5 that could be, but we don't need them for anything], and had some fuse problems. This is not that unusual, as we were putting a drain on it, but the way it was wired was odd. Our apartment had 2 circuits. One controlled the second bedroom, second bathroom, and hall lights. The other controlled the master bedroom, master bathroom, living room, kitchen, and porch. On a 10 amp fuse. But even that's not so bad. The problem was when we overran the current, the fuse didn't blow like it was supposed to. No, it shot sparks all over the laundry room, accompanied by a nice smell of ozone. When this was told to the maintenance [at least 3 times, because they didn't speak English well enough to understand], they said we should use fewer computers. That's really not the point/solution.

Overall, I'd say it was a fine place. Decently-sized, not too expensive. There are nicer places, sure, but this is a good middle ground for people looking to not spend too much money. Just be prepared to have to put up with stupid maintenance folk and neighbors.
