Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2008
I recently moved out of these apartments. Moved in late June of 2005. We chose these apartments for the size, location and price. The appliances and quality of materials are really poor. Lived here without issue until we decided to move in June 2008. Prior to moving, I notified the apartment that our capeting was old (about 4.5 years old), because I knew they were going to end up replacing it and I wanted to make sure we weren't going to be charged for it. I again noted it in our notice to move out. We conducted a walk-through on June 15. They didn't point out anything that needed to be repaired, replaced, cleaned, or that anything was damaged or a concern. In addition, I specifically asked WHILE WE WERE THERE, if anything needed to be repaired, replaced, cleaned or if there were any concerns. The apartment rep (Kathy) stated "No." So, with that, we turned over possession and made demand for our deposit.
Days later (and here are my issues), I called to see when we would get our deposit back (knowing it should be July 15). Ashley, the apartment manager (who is new to these apartments when the management recently changed hands) told me I would be getting the whole amount back minus $83.91 for our "final" water/trash bill. $83.91! Naturally, I began to argue with her about the amount and after days of fighting her (and learning that they "estimate" a final bill - NOT BASE IT ON ACTUAL CHARGES' BEWARE #1. Insist on getting a REAL final bill), I finally had to get the bill from WaterOne and correctly calculate the final amount myself ($47.94 for the last 2 months).
Two days after I finally got that all straightened out, I got a "bill" for damages to the apartment! mind you, again, during the walk-through, nothing was noted, nothing was given to us, and we were specifically told nothing was wrong. Several rounds with Ashley again, and I ended up getting referred to their lawyer, who, subsequently made some bald-faced lies about what occurred (e.g. that we didn't return our keys at the time of walk-through; that we had "insisted" on a walk-through on a day when Ashley wasn't there, so Kathy really didn't know what was going on (Question: how is that my problem'); that the carpeting was "new" at the time of move in (which was a knowingly false representation by the apartment complex). It goes on...
All said and done, I recall, back when we were looking at apartments, someone writing something very similar [to my experience now] but that I shrugged it off as probably some disgruntled tenant. Wish I would have heeded her advice not to rent here. I had been a renter for 20 years and never had a place try to crew me over until now. They will try to screw you at these apartments (note, management company: Evergreen Realty Group) so they can offset their costs when they renovate. My advice' Document everything (take pictures upon move-in and move-out) and INSIST they give you copies of your move-in and move-out check lists and of the ACTUAL final bills. They've been a headache; and we are SO glad we're out of there.
