Don't Rent Here... Just Turn Around and Walk Away

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

I lived in this complex for a year, ending in May of 2006 and we were screwed around from the very beginning. First the leasing agent that showed the apartment informed me that there were washers and dryers in every 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. When I advised her that I would like them removed because I already owned my appliances, she convinced me sell them and use those that belonged to complex since there would be no discount on rent for not having them and then the complex would be liable for any repairs if they were to occur. Seemed logical to me. After calling twice to confirm a move-in date and provide confirmation numbers for utilities I arrived to the city the day before my belongings were to be delivered and 45 days after I signed a lease for a specific unit number I was informed that they were unaware that I was coming and my apartment wouldn??t be ready for two weeks. Quickly they were able to relocate me to a different unit number, however my change of address, KCPL, phone and cable were already completed to incorrect unit. I wasn??t even offered an apology for my inconvenience. I arrived in my new unit only to discover pet stained carpets and of course, no washer and dryer. I called the office and was advised that Liz, the leasing agent who showed me the property no longer worked there and I was going to have to lease a washer and dryer from the complex??s appliance provider or go without. Honestly I should have just left right then. From that point forward I fell through my rotted balcony (which I had filed 3 repair requests for), two people were stabbed in front of my apartment, a man drove his car into my apartment building, I was hit head on in the parking lot by an illegal immigrant with no insurance or drivers license who was also a complex resident and I went two months with two concrete stairs missing my from apartment entrance. This complex changed hands 3 times in the year I lived there. There were more office staff members over that time frame than there were people in my graduating high school class. The first batch was the worst their rather open policy of sleeping with tenants, which I can only verify because my roommate was pulled into the mess when the guy started hitting on him practically during our lease signing appointment. When I questioned the delay in the repairs to the step, I was informed by the newest complex manager that their shop had been robbed blind and they had no service equipment. The stairs were only finally fixed when I filed complainants with the code inspector for the city of Overland Park. My boyfriend is of Hispanic background and I am in no way racist but I was repeatedly harassed or gawked at by groups of latin men standing outside of apartments, finally to the point I was uncomfortable to even walk my dog. The apartment below me housed 9 people and the family allowed their children to climb all over parked cars. Mine was severely scratched when I walked out one to see four kids on my hood?? when I asked them to remove themselves they proceeded to slide forward and damage the hood with the rivets from their jeans. Besides being angry, I had to be somewhat concerned for all the unsupervised children with the two registered sex offender that lived in the complex. It??s unfortunate but the lesson here is that you do get the neighbors you pay for. For that reason please do your research before you move to this, or any other apartment complex. Here is a great tool I found for the city of Overland Park that helped me to select my new apartment community. Better luck to each of you! http://gis.opkansas.org/website/pub_crime/pub_crime.asp'ms= LODGE OF OVERLAND PARK&BufDist=0.0
