Lease renewals and Non-Disclosures

The apartment is great - location etc. pretty good too - but my main beef is with the sneaky unprofessional way the management (not necessarily the Staff here)deals with issues impacting leases, refunds, etc.
I came here during a "look and lease" promo that promised an iPOD if you looked and leased on the same day. My roommate and I decided to lease and set-up a move in date over Thanksgiving. When we arrived we were extremely disappointed with the apartment - the floorplan was not what we wanted or thought we were getting. So we decided not to take the apartment at a great inconvenience to ourselves since we had already transferred unitlities, scheduled a moving van, etc. When we went back to the office the person we dealt with became frustrated but was willing to try and find us what we wanted. However, we had to wait another two weeks and then we also had to put up another "fee" because the location of our future home was on the North side and we were scheduled to move in on the South side. Besides the hassles on trying to get everything straightened out with the untilities, etc. and rescheduling a move, extending our present lease with the property we were leasing, we were told we didn't get the iPod because we had to move in the same month we leased, and we never were refunded our "fee" from the other apartment.
The big shock came when the lease renewal offer occurred. The term for the renewal was only for a six or seven month lease. At first, I thought it was a mistake and when I was finally able to talk to someone from the "Management" office I was told that the new lease term was correct - no mistake - and that the way the lease terms are determined is by how many properties are coming open during a given period of time. I told them that I thought that that was a disclosure issue that should have been mentioned at the outset of signing my lease in the first place. Of course I was told that they were operating well within the fair housing laws and pointed out that not many people would sign in the first place if they knew they might not get a full year lease renewal. Of course, my rent also went up - not too much but I know it will be raised again - only six months later. What is the fairness in that'
I spoke with several friends and colleagues who rent at various locations and none of them had ever encountered such a policy.
I also wasn't notified of the lease option until 7 days before the end of the month, at which time I had to let them know my intent, although I was told I would have 45 days advance notice. What they don't tell you is that the 45 days includes the final month of your lease and since you have to give 30-days advance notice - at best case you should have 15 days to make up your mind. But my lease renewal was late do I lost extra time.
I hate the thought of moving - but I also don't want to deal with not being able to predict how long my next lease renewal option will be.
Just be careful of any move-in specials and ask a lot of questions before signing!
