If it sounds too good to be true....

it probably is!
Let me start off by saying that the Hotel Stilwell is a government assistance apartment. This means that only certain people will qualify to live there.
To qualify, you can't be a college student (I was just finishing, so they let me in), you must make under a certain amount of money, and you must have good credit and references.
Due to this, many of the residents there are disabled and unemployed, or are receiving government assistance and unemployed. This means that your neighbors and their crying babies, will nearly always be home, and almost always be making noise.
Parking at the Stilwell is okay, but more often than not I had to park in the street, where you can only park on one side or the other on specific nights, which ended up being a bigger pain that I thought it would. When it snowed, city trucks moved all of the snow out of the middle of the street, and onto my car. Getting my car out so that I could go to work required an hour and a half. :-(
Noise at the Stilwell is one of the biggest problems. I only had neighbors on three sides, and all three gave me noise trouble. Making out exact conversations that people were having wasn't at all uncommon. And not only do the neighbors make a lot of noise, but the Stilwell is right next to the police and fire departments, which means that everytime anybody anywhere has a problem, you'll be the first to hear about it.
While I was there, the office staff was terrible. Aside from keeping unregular hours, they would often disappear during the few hours of the day that they were supposed to have someone in the office. If I had a dollar for everytime that I waited for the office ton open, only to wait for an additional hour and eventually go to work or class, or everytime that I would go down to find a note saying that they'd gone to Wal-Mart for a few hours, I'd be much richer.
My office staff complaints don't stop there, however. They rarely returned calls when I would leave voice mails asking for a return call and they lost my deposit check. You heard it right. I moved in in November, and paid my first months rent and my deposit before doing so. In March, I received a note under my door stating that I hadn't paid all of my rent yet. After many attempts to contact the office staff, they finally got back with me and said that I had never paid my deposit before moving in (over six months earlier). I went and printed out a copy of my online bank report, which showed my deposit check clearing, and took the carbon copy of the check to the office. Initially, I was told that that was all that I would need, but a few days later I was told that I needed to give them a copy of the voided check and a letter from my bank stating that the check had cleared my account. This turned into a big waste of my time not because of any mistake that I had made, but because they had lost track of my deposit check.
Most everything else that this site keeps track of was satisfactory. The Stilwell is a beautiful building in a nice part of town, but it is noisy, poorly constructed, poorly managed, and doesn't offer you the kinds of neighbors that you'd want to invite over to watch television. In my opinion, the negeatives greatly outweight the positives.
Oh, and by the way, if you need to get out of your lease agreement early for some reason, good luck. There are three ways to get out of it, and there is no early termination clause. The three ways' Death, military duty, and extended hospitalization. Otherwise you pay the entire remainded of your lease, which is what I ended up having to do when I had to move out five months early.

I hear you. I was scheduled to move into the Stilwell over a month ago, and the management staff has promised me three move-in days that have yet come to pass. Excuses included all the toilets in the building backing up, office manager falling through a plate glass window, and lightning striking the building. This morning was the last straw. I was scheduled to sign the lease papers at 12:30 PM. At 11:45 AM, management called me to state that I would not, after all, be receiving my keys to move in in an hour, in fact that they didn't know when the apartment would in fact be ready. I had already booked movers, delivery for my new furniture, and a preist to come bless the apartment. I had to call all these people and cancel at the very last minute, on my dime. Since I haven't actually lived there, I can't say about the noise. I can imagine that all the welfare families would make quite a bit of noise--however I do have the tendency to tell anyone in a Budweiser shirt and Nascar hat exactly what I think of their kind if they persist upon being friendly. I wish I'd read this review earlier. I am going to contact the Hotel Besse. The neighbors won't be much better, but the decaying grandeur appeals to my morbid side. |

Let me start off by saying that I do live here at the Stilwell but that is not something that i would like everyone to know. I have had alot of problems with management, neighbors and lets not forget about BUGS!!!! Thats right, this place is crawling with bugs. I do not recomend this place to anyone. The only reason i'm still here is because of my lease. It's almost up and then I'm out. I have the largest family living in the smallest two bedroom apartment. They say the rent is based on square footage and where the apartment is located. Well thats B.S. I pay more a month the the people with bigger apartments and the ones on broadway!!! They also say that no pets but there are people that have gotten Doc. notes say that the pet is a living company. Half these people can't even take care of themselves let alone a pet. but hey what ever floats your boat. But these people have dogs and cats. Some just open their door and let their cat run around. The people with dogs take them outside but don't clean up after them. Like i really want to step in dog pooh. The cops have been here I don't know how many times for all different reasons. I just thought that i would throw my two cents in there for people that are thinking of living here. By the way, management is not always reliable. They lose stuff all the time then blame it on the computers. If you have any problems don't expect them to fix it! They also come in (with a three day notice) to inspect your place to make sure its up to their housekeeping codes. This place is nothing but a big joke!! |
