Good place, some problems, expensive
From: foxdieDate posted: 3/26/2009
Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
When I moved here in November I had been trying to search all the good apartments I could find in Wichita. It seemed that the Case apartments were the best quality. The others just seemed very low quality, unsettling and if I may use the word, "icky." It was between Newport and The Remington. I ended up choosing Newport because of the central location (even though it was farther from work at Koch Industries), and because the apartment seemed to be bigger.
I've got a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom on the 3rd floor.
The good:
The looks of the apartment, the quality of the insides and the appliances are all great.
It's been quiet (I'm probably the noisiest resident around but only because I play music fairly loud during the daytime, and I'm awake later than most).
There's a gate (though it doesn't shut sometimes), and there's security that patrols. (Unfortunately a friend who also lives here had his car broken into and his cd player stolen when it was parked in the front lot (outside of the gate). So there is always the chance.)
The management has always seemed friendly and helpful whenever I had to go see them.
I've had a few maintenance problems (front door handle had trouble locking/unlocking, shower head was leaking, one morning after a snow I noticed water dripping from the bathroom ceiling vents) and they were all fixed fairly quickly.
The bad:
What's not so great is the insulation. The walls seem really thin and let cold air in during the winter, the windows are cold and bring cold inside, the door to the patio had cold air poring in from the edges (the door also wouldn't shut completely). The closet by the front door got really cold if the door was left shut because it was right by the outside and there was no heat getting to it - so keep that in mind for your shoes and coats during the winter. Because of this, my electric bill was $150 during the winter and this last bill where I hardly ran the heater (March) is only about $60. So while this apartment is the highest quality I've found, you are paying a lot of extra money.
When I was moving in, the management made it seem like the apartment would go through some epic cleaning and fixing up - and justified the deposit price with this. However when I moved in, it was clean but there were still unclean spots, the kitchen tile was broken, and the carpet wasn't totally cleaned. Hard to justify the high deposit for that.
The design of the kitchen sink area made it so the detachable faucet hose would get caught on the pipes underneath... just a minor frustration - just leave the hose extended and lay it down. The faucet also makes weird "popping" noises whenever it is turned on. Maintainence said it was air bubbles in the pipes but it always happens. I'm used to it by now and it doesn't harm anything. This also may be specific to my apartment.
What else... umm... oh the uh... towel rack thing in the shower/bathtub breaks easily if your girlfriend grabs it... fair warning.
So right now, I'm looking around at apartments to find a cheaper 2 bedroom and I'm finding plenty of cheaper ones but it's frustrating because they all look disgusting, are in a bad part of town, or they have horrible ratings from other visitors. Maybe I'll look for houses to rent... but then I went to apartments because I didn't want to deal with flaky landlords - I'd rather deal with employees of a business like Case. So I can't say if I would recommend Newport or not. If you've got the money and don't mind either blasting your heater during the winter or being a little chilly this is one of the best places.
