By far the worst place I?ve ever lived

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003

When we moved into Forest Oaks, my fiancee had previously lived there under different management years before, and while he admitted it was not perfect he also said that he?d had no real problems with the place. We viewed our apartment which was actually quite roomy and nice. We moved in under a move-in special so our rent was reduced and the deposit was low. The complex pays all needed utilities so that was an added bonus. It boasts many ammenities such as onsite laundry, a tanning bed, video rental, 2 pools, and a weight room. As you will read later in the review they weren?t all what they were cracked up to be. When we moved in we had one apartment manager that was very sweet and helpful.

Within 2 months, management had changed (it changed every couple of months) and they weren?t dreadful but not great either. Then a few months later management changed again and they WERE quite dreadful.

When we moved into the apartment we sited a few things we?d found about the apartment that needed repairs. 2 of those things still had not been repaired upon our moving out. The "sparkling" pools were quite green most of the time due to a problem with the filtration system. I say this quite honestly, the pools were only open about one day a week. The rest of the time they were chained off or unusable because they weren?t either safe, or because they had a problem with tennants throwing trash into them and as a "punishment" would close them. The laundry facilities were greatly lacking and perpetually broken and filthy. The video selection hadn?t been updated since the early 80?s. The weight room was alright, but closed at 10pm every night. Those are the "ammenities". Parking was ok, but there were a lot of abandoned cars in the lot that blocked good parking spots that, although promised many times, were never towed. Parking was not well lit at all.

The grounds were terrible. Trash littered everywhere, grass that was either dead or too tall. Inadequate snow removal. Dog feces everywhere, and just a general feel of filthiness. The lights in the hallways would burn out and stay burned out for weeks before they were replaced. We were offered at no charge pest control "once a month". I am a stay at home mom and in a year of living at Forest Oaks, only saw the pest control officer twice.

Noise was usually not a problem, but occasionally someone would get angry and slam doors or stand in the hall and scream at each other. I specifically remember once calling the police as two people fought loudly a floor below me. The woman screaming was so loud that the officer on the phone thought she was in the apartment with me. The apartment offered a "courtesy officer" who could never be reached.

My heat died in the winter and was out for 3 weeks before they sent someone to look at it and another week before they sent someone to repair it. It was broken again within a month, and in repairing it they left a huge hole in my ceiling which was never patched and a really bad mess that they did not clean up. But by far the best example of poor maintenence was my stove situation. Two of the burners didn?t work when we moved in. We filed a work order. Literally a month later they sent a maintenence person to look at it. He "repaired" it and one of the burners did indeed work. He said he needed a part to fix the other. Months passed. We called again and they sent someone else, a different person. The other maintenence man had been fired. The person took one look at my stove and said that it was a fire hazard and that I couldn?t use it. He told me he would order a new stove and it would be there within 3 days but under no circumstances was I to use my stove. I am not lying or exaggerating here when I say that it took them 6 weeks to get me a new stove. We pestered them by phone for weeks and finally I sent my fiance down to check on the status of our order. My stove was sitting in the storage under the office and had been there for weeks!

I would definitely not recommend Forest Oaks apartments. They never know whether they are coming or going. The management changes every few months and are usually rude and unhelpful. The maintenence staff is a JOKE, my fiancee fixed most of our problems himself, the grounds are nasty and unkempt and the ammenities are virtually unusuable. Please, trust every word I?ve said to be true and do yourself a favor. Look ELSEWHERE. You will be miserble at Forest Oaks.
