We lived on the bottom level of a 3- story complex. The people above us had two 50-60lb dogs and I swear it sounded like every morning at 9am they let a squirrel loose for the dogs to chase. The pounding noise drove us insane! Management didn't seem to care. Since we're college students, 9 am is to us like 5am is to other people. (We started having people over as often as we could, and instructed them to make all kinds of noise under these people's window at 3 or so in the morning.) Plus, you pay way too much for a 1050 square foot apartment. And the security gate runs off your home phone, which wouldn't be a problem, except we had dial-up internet, so people could be at the gate for 30 minutes with no answer. The gates weren't even shut the last month we lived there. And if anyone is viewing the gates as a security feature, whenever I forgot my card I just followed someone else in.
