It seems as though there are so many negative comments that go on this site, but it just depends what your experience is. Everyone has a different experience when living somewhere and everyone has their own thoughts on issues. Whether bad or good experiences, it's apartment living. I am one of those individuals who has had a wonderful experience living at Old Farm. I lived there for 4 years (2004-2008). I loved it! I had no major maintenance issues (which was a blessing)...and when I did have issues, they were taken care of in an appropriate amount of time. I lived in the front part (along Appian Way) and the only noise heard was pretty much from the road with traffic. My neighbors were very nice and pretty quiet (some loud music at times, but never enough to get extremely upset about or anything). -lived on the second floor. I really would not recommend living toward the back because of all the aparent noise that people talk about...plus, I have seen police and fire trucks and ambulances come to the back quite often within the last year or so...not sure what that was all about, but don't really care. All I am saying is my stay there in the front of the complex was wonderful!
Now, I know what some people are going to respond with...oh, don't read this, it's from someone who currently works in the office and they are trying to get good reviews for the place....well, I am not one who currently works there, but I DID work there for a year, okay, I am not going to lie about that. I worked there and it was great! I know the problems people encountered at the time I worked there and they were fixed in a timely manner. I also know that if you are going to have visitors and know in advance that they are staying for a night or two...get them a temporary tag for their mirror to hang so they can park in a regular parking spot...there were not a lot of visitor parking because many were always taken, so that is an option...just explain it to the office, that's all you have to do! Plus, I had my fair share of people coming in and complaining that their car got towed...well, then I guess if you are a visitor (or a resident who was goofy enough to forget to ask for a parking sticker and give them your plate number and make/model of your car), then that is your own fault because the office doesn't bail people out of getting towed for being stupid! (had my fair share of idiots come in and yell at me like it was my fault for that...and even had someone throw something toward me and onto the ground off my desk when I was pregnant at the time cuz he was upset...so, I called the cops on him...which they sure squared people like that away)...anyway...so...let's get back to living at Old Farm...
I think that if you like the location...close enough with driving distance to UK, close to shopping/grocery, restaurants, parks, etc.), then live there. It's an apartment and quite decent if you ask me. I have a two year old and a dog and it was enjoyable. If you have pets, they accept quite a few different breeds (with some limits, but very few). The one downfall of that is that there are many that apparently don't care about picking up after their pets (which is really not very difficult to do considering there are many areas around the complex with poop bags to use - and if there are non, then tell the office or maintenance and they will replenish them - or you can just use a Kroger or Wal-mart bag if you have sense to save those if you own a pet (I sure have a TON of those at this point!)! Just one other thing about the grounds is that apparently, no matter how many times they fix the fencing around the place, morons continue to break them because they can't seem to walk around to the front of the complex (or climb over the fence for that matter) to get where they are going...that is completely childish and vandalizing proper and should not be done...they have replaced the fencing about ten different times in the last year or so that I have lived there and that is downright crazy they have to spend money to do that! As far as the amenities go...the workout room rocks (I am a big workout person!)...there is one eliptical machine that is broken, though and has not been fixed for a while...so not sure about that, but everything else works GREAT! I never used the pool much because I have a two year old who likes to do everything herself, but hates the floaties, so I wait to take her to the public pools in the summer with the slides and such...but, the pool area is totally fine and a nice amenity to use...as is the hottub. I never got into tanning cuz I am fair-skinned, but they do have a tanning bed that you have to stop by the office to get a key for and give your ID. Pretty good amenities for the place, though! :)
Man, I just keep going! As for the insulation of the apartment...because it's an apartment, it's okay...it does get a little chilly in the winter/cold weather around the windows which has a tendancy to affect the apartment some, but I was fine with it. You could put something like plastic or whatever around the windows during that time to help (I think that is what people use...). As for the heat bill...yeah, it was a little high, but not nearly as bad as some places...on the whole the highest I ever had to pay was between $160-$180 a few months in the wintertime...that is because when I am not home I turn the dial so it doesn't stay completely on the whole time I am gone, yet does not freeze pipes either. That saves a lot of money there. The apartment complex is about 25 years old, at this point and is holding up pretty well, in my opinion.
The reason I am no longer living there is because I finally bought a house for my family that I have been wanting for a long time! If I had not bought one right now (waited longer or whatever), then I would still be living there.
I truly hope this helps anyone looking to move to a different location or from out-of-state or whatever.
