I lived at Old Farm for exactly one year. My roommate and I had a good overall experience. When we moved in, we had new carpet, mini blinds, most all appliances were brand new and we had fresh paint. It was lovely. We had several very small items that needed fixing upon moving in (outside patio door replaced, chain lock replaced) and those were fixed within one week after we moved in. During our stay we had a garbage disposal issue which was resolved same day, our stove quit working and it was replaced with a new stove the very next day. On several occasions maintenance staff even helped me with things that were not part of their job description such as hooking up my washer and dryer and allowing my movers to borrow tools to help with unloading. I have nothing negative to say about our experience.
Yes, it's true that dog poop was everywhere...but that's the fault of the dog owners that don't follow the rules. I moved out in Oct.2007 and remember specifically that notices were being placed on our doors to remind people to clean up after their pets. Also, I think it's pretty obvious by looking outside at any given time of day...a lot of residents have animals, its a pet friendly community, if you hate dogs then you shouldn't pick that type of complex. Different strokes for different folks, most dog owners are willing to overlook this issue. Yes, occasionally the garbage was piled up in the dumpsters and the mail room was a mess...but if people weren't so lazy that wouldn't happen. Some people found it much easier to throw trash down outside of the dumpster, I always made the effort to put it in the container. Besides, at least the maintenance staff cleaned it up! What if they just left it there and let it rot.
Yes, it's true that some of the fitness equipment didn't work, and the pool area got rowdy. Those things could be improved, but once again...these are issues that the management does not CREATE and in many ways they cannot control it. Besides, lets face it...you don't rent an apartment for the pool or fitness area, you rent it for the apartment. Yes, there were sometimes weird people out late at night, and occasionally I could hear my neighbors music. So what' When you live in an apartment community, you have to realize that even if you pay 1200 dollars a month and have luxury ammenities...you are still going to eventually deal with noises and maybe some slight inconveniences.
I felt safe at Old Farm, I had an enjoyable experience. I always had a decent parking space. It met all of my needs while I attended school at UK. I was always nice to the staff, and they were always nice to me. I am a firm believer in doing unto others as you would have them do unto you and I think in this kind of situation--it works. Be nice and polite to the management and see if that makes a difference in how quickly you get your smoke alarms, toilets and doors fixed.
I recommend this place, and I am dissapointed to see so many negative comments. If I ever come back to Lexington, I'll move right back into Old Farm unless I buy a house. No, I am not part of the Old Farm staff but I will proudly serve as an advocate for living there.

Well im glad you had a good experiance but I still live here and my experiance has been completly different. It takes monthes for the maintence staff to fix anything in my apartment. I know that noise comes with an apartment life but at 3 am shouldnt it stop? They should at least keep it in their apartment and not out in the parking lot. And the management... If only being nice to them would make them be nice to you. I wish! I have always talked to them with respect and they are so rude.

I lived at a much nicer and pricer complex before Old Farm, and let me tell you, the extra money wasn't for the amenities, it was for better neighbors. Yes, it IS the responsibility of the staff to make sure tenants aren't disrespectful to other tenants. The pool area is their responsibility. At my old place you would have been banned and possibily kicked out of your apartment for such behavior. It was part of the lease.
As for maintence issues, they are really terrible. It took 45 days for them to fix/replace my microwave. The air-conditioning went out during the hottest part of August and the staff acted like, "well, it's hot". No, simply unexceptable. I had to threaten to sue to get the issue resolved. One bright spot was just lately. Our refrigerator went out and they replaced it that day. I was actually kind of shocked.
