Excellent Downtown Living

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2004
I relocated to Louisville because of my job, and didn't have any time to really look around for apartments. I took a blind faith leap when I secured a two-bedroom apartment at the Crescent Centre. I was glad I did. I have outlined a very honest set of pros and cons. Overall, I highly recommend this community.
Pros:
* Location, Location, Location. It's less than a five minute commute for me every morning. When I have friends over, we walk to 4th Street Live... then we stumble home. We have never had any problems on the walk either way (even at 4am).
* Staff is very friendly and quick to respond. Jennifer Lopez (leasing consultant, not the pop star) is so friendly! They have an onsite maintenance man for emergencies. One night at about 2000, my food disposal began to leak. I called the maintenance number (you leave a message), and the man called me back within five minutes. He was right over, and promptly fixed my disposal. I tried to offer him a beer, but he wouldn't accept. At 2000, that's professionalism!
* The walls are floors are solid. I have NEVER heard anyone living on any side of me. Walking through the hallway, you may hear a little noise, but in your apartment, it's silent (with the exception of the trash chute, see below)
* Onsite Courtesy Officer (weekends)
* Security is great. I have never felt uncomfortable living here. Areas are well lit. The courtesy officer patrols the grounds at night on the weekends.
* Neighbors are of various backgrounds and ages... most are very friendly.
* UTILITIES ARE INCLUDED (if you're in the tower). Utilities include Electricity, Water, and trash. All you have to pay for is cable, telephone, and internet. I've never lived in a place that included utilities like this before... it's sooooo nice not to have to pay an electric bill on top of your rent. I run my AC at 70 all the time. This is one of my biggest pros.
* The grounds are kept up very nicely. The community as a whole is attractively groomed. I especially love the buildings at night.
* Water is extremely hot. My shower becomes a sauna on demand.
Cons:
* There's a waiting list for parking spots in their garage. I don't remember being told this while speaking to the leasing consultant... I waited three months for a parking spot. If you don't have a spot in their garage, there are lots adjacent to the building, but it is an inconvenience when transporting groceries from your car.
* I cannot see a filter in my AC. I think it just recirculates and cools the air. My apartment gets dusty very easily.
* Trash Chute. People are very inconsiderate about this, and when your apartment is adjacent to it... well, I've been woken from a good sleep by it...the chute ran right behind my bedroom. If your apartment is not next to it, don't worry about it.
* Moves in/out are not permitted on the weekend, which may cause some problems if you're a business professional who can only move on the weekend. There is no freight elevator... they hang blankets in an elevator and turn off normal operation of it (so that the doors do not close and it won't be called to another floor without it being operated from inside it). They will not allow moving vans (no matter the size) inside their garage; therefore, one must park in a side alley and carry (quite a distance) their belongings. Get a mover, a dolly, or something. I had a friend help me move without the assistance of a dolly, and we were both very sore for days. If you're doing the move yourself, be sure you're adequately prepared. If you have movers, let them worry about it. Be sure to offer them a beer afterward.
Neutrals:
* Other things occupy the building otherwise than the community. There's a renal care facility downstairs, and there are sickly or other assorted decrepit elderly hobbling back and forth to a bus during the day. If you're working or have full time school, you may not notice.
* There is no official guest parking. You'll want to have your guests (at night) park in the System Parking lot between 2nd and 3rd street. It's an open air lot, and they charge to park there during the day. However, at night, no parking charges are enforced.
Why I left:
Family death out of state gave me no choice. The leasing office was very very accommodating in this regard. I couldn't be more thankful...not every community is so understanding.
Summary:
Crescent Centre is a great place to live. For me: The cost was very economic, the location was great, having my utilities included was wonderful, and the staff and the building are top notch. It was really "hassle free" living in Louisville's beautiful downtown area. The few cons I had listed are things that only mildly bothered me -- they may not bother you or even apply to you at all. If you're considering Crescent Centre as a community, I highly recommend it.
