The day I viewed the model of a townhouse in Jamestown I was very much excited! It was BEAUTIFUL! I was told that my new place would have the exact same appliances, they always replace the carpet, and repaint a very neutral clean looking egg shell color in the apartment. I was told this when I paid my deposit of $99 a month ago. Yesterday I went to finish up the paper work and give them that big move in check. We were told by ------ (the lease specialist) that we was cutting us some serious deals because she really liked us. She said she understood I was a college student and my mom already had huge tuition expenses so she was trying to save us money on this townhome. I believe she was really offering such "deals" because she wanted to butter us up before we walked into the death trap I was to move into.
A maintenance man "-----" met us at at the unit. Upon entering there was a green dog sticker on my door. He explained that was on there because someone needed to check the air conditioning unit. We entered the townhouse and everything seemed fine at first, but then we began to look around. The carpet was missing in places of the living room area, the hood on the kitchen stove had been burned from the light being left on too long, and there were cable wires hanging out of the walls everywhere, he was hesitant to document this, my mother made him.
IT GETS WORSE. As my mom looked around the living room she noticed all the electrical outlets were BURNED! She ran her fingers across them and sure enough there was BLACK SOOT on the outlets! ----- assured us that this outlet had just sparked a little when the people were moving out and that they had actually replaced the inside of the outlet and everything was okay. My mom was a little worried but still we moved on with the inspection.
We went upstairs to the bedrooms only to find - THOSE OUTLETS HAD BEEN ON FIRE TOO! Almost every outlet in this townhouse was burned, scorched, and they didn't even take the time to clean the soot off! I'm assuming that if they couldn't be bothered to wipe off the soot, they surely probably didn't take the time to replace these outlets.
My mother called my dad and discussed that ----- had explained to her that there were aluminum wires throughout all of Jamestown and sometimes those aluminum wires spark and smoke when they are loose, but they had all been tightened and we really should not worry. My mother instructed us to GET OUT! He been in the home building, remolding, heating and air business most of his life - he told my mother they NEVER use aluminum wire because its an EXTREME FIRE HAZARD!
We demanded that we get our check back as well as our signed paperwork VOIDED and they acted as though we were insane. A man in the office even had the nerve to say - any kind of home with any wiring can burn down. With the most put out attitude the office manager gave us our check back - but then said she could not give us the lease papers, but she would void them later. We requested she void them right there in front of us and after much eye rolling and huffing and puffing she did so.
IF YOU LIVE THERE OR ARE THINKING ABOUT MOVING THERE - please know your house is wired with the lowest grade most flammable wire possible. It is outlawed to use in several states.
