Not bad... just pick your spot wisely

I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive that my stay at River Hill was going to be fraught with some of the nightmare scenarios I'd read here before I moved in. I'm happy to say that, one year on and on my way out for employment reasons, it's really been quite a pleasant stay overall.

My girlfriend and I rent a 2BR town home on the perimeter of the property. I think that was the smartest decision we could have made moving into this complex. There are buildings in the centre housing the "flats." There's good reason to believe that we probably would not have been nearly as happy moving into those. Mainly, this is due to the quality of the walls and floors. Granted, the construction within those buildings could be entirely different, but it pains to me imagine that they would be of similar quality. Our top floor squeaks and creaks to the point that, should one of us choose to rest downstairs, the sound of the floor upstairs is enough to disturb your sleep. We can also hear our neighbors closing doors through the walls and know that electronic sound at a modest volume can permeate the partition into a neighbor's space.

That said, this is my only complaint worth stressing. The management has been friendly and helpful whenever we've called upon them and the maintenance staff are omnipresent and helpful. We haven't had any emergency issues but whether or not we have a minor detail that needs attention, like a garbage disposal problem, they arrive promptly and are very friendly. The property is also well-maintained on the outside with regular garbage pickup and frequent landscaping service.

We do like the location an awful lot near the Frankfort Ave. scene and access to the interstate is great. The community seems to respect their neighbors during the evening (at least on our side of the property) and I can't seem to recall a notable disturbance. Just about the only one we get is the A/C & heating unit in our living room wall that blares out whatever show you're watching on the tube.

There is a legitimate concern for safety, however. A tenant two doors down had his car broken into and my neighbor had someone walk up to her door in broad daylight without knocking and turned the handle and pushed on the front door. I have not personally been a victim of crime in this neighborhood nor have I seen any committed firsthand. There is a policeman who lives in the neighborhood and at times we notice a sheriff patrolling the grounds in his cruiser. We've lucked out with some good neighbors-- families mostly, where we live anyway on the far south side of the complex.

Parking can be a bit of pain some days, especially on Sunday or late at night. It's usually just fine.

All in all, if you're looking for a 2-3 bedroom apartment I'd go with the town homes and see if you can find out who your neighbors are on either side of the vacant unit before signing a lease. I do have the feeling that we got pretty lucky with our placement in this complex, though.
