Move Along - Nothing to see here - Don't even consider living here!

Based upon my personal experiences I cannot recommend Summit Place Apartments. We moved in spring 2004 and we have had nothing but troubles. If you are going to call yourself a "luxury" apartment complex and change some of the highest rates in the Springhurst area - you have to expect to attract people who are willing to pay for and therefore expect great service, attention, and accommodations.

On our move-in day our apartment was not prepared for us. Despite it being brand new, the AC did not work, the telephone and the satellite connections were not hooked up, there were no screens on the windows or doors, and the windows were filthy. The current maintenance man worked to get it fixed, all the while complaining about how overworked he was and how the office staff did not inform him we were moving in that day. He finally got our AC working, but he hooked up the telephone incorrectly. He hooked it up with phone line meant for the apartment above us - we finally figured that out when we started getting calls for them! After several tries over the next few days, the telephone was correctly hooked up, and the satellite TV was turned on.

About a week later we noticed that an unopened bag of peanuts in our pantry was opened and peanut shells were scattered on the floor. We soon figured out that we weren't the only ones living here - we had mice. We called up the staff and let them know - eventually (2 days later) they came out and laid out one trap...only one trap that we were supposed to reuse. I am not that brave! We went to Wal-Mart and bought our own traps and we caught 5 mice in 2 days. We were understanding as mice can sometimes enter homes during construction. After 4 weeks of no mice we noticed more mice dropping and caught even more. I told the office staff again and they never did anything - except to tell me they didn't know anyone else who had this issue (later we found out that many others tenants had this issue). Well a few weeks later we had more visitors - more signs of mouse dropping on the floor and all over the food in the pantry. It took us 3 more requests to finally get an exterminator out here who found the hole where they were entering our apartment. Finally 5 months after the first mouse was caught, the maintenance staff patched the hole.

Speaking of exterminating - apparently Summit Place does not believe it in. We have terrible problems with spiders - not the small ones, but the quarter sized jumping spiders. In the shower, on the walls, on the ceiling, and in our clothes. We finally pushed the issue enough to get professional exterminators. The exterminator said that they should spray for the spiders all over the apartment complex (he is contracted to do so at other places) - and not just in the apartments of those who complain - I agree. The previous apartment complex we stayed at sprayed for pests every 3 months - sounds reasonable to me.

One of the "luxury" amenities of the Summit Place is that they provide satellite TV to each apartment, and not cable. They provide 41 channels to you for $30 (including HBO) - which is not too bad of deal since you do not need an ugly dish outside your apartment. Well I should have known something was up when I saw that a lot of tenants here still have dishes erected outside on their patios - despite the complex offering satellite directly. You cannot choose your channels, so if you like FOX news and GOLF you will love their lineup. Because the signal is split to all the apartments, it is weak and on my big screen TV the channels are pixilated and hard on the eyes. If you visit the clubhouse change the channel to 50 or 59 and you'll be amazed at how bad it looks! If you go with their satellite I would recommend on buying a pair of rabbit ears to hook up to the TV to use when the satellite signal goes down, or if the channels freeze (which happens all the time). I was eventually told to order satellite directly and have my own dish if I wanted such things as channel selection and better picture quality.

You also get to you know your neighbors - I know when they get up, when they go to the bathroom, when they shower, when they cook, when they watch TV, when they come in, and when they leave. I would have thought that "luxury" apartments would have had better sound insulation - but not here at Summit Place! I would recommend a top floor apartment only!

Another thing to watch out for is your neighbors on the same floor - I do not know how all the apartments are set up, but our master bedroom shares a wall with the next door neighbor's living room. Who would design it that way' We are sometimes awakened from his late night and early morning TV/Stereo. So make sure you are a heavy sleeper.

Last but not least is the staff - There have been three staff changes since we moved in. I have always felt that every time I had a maintenance request they never took it seriously. It always took me more than 2-3 requests to get something accomplished and the staff rarely follows up to let you know that your request will be taken care of. At first the maintenance staff would enter my apartment, fix the item, and never leave a note - creepy since they have unabated access to all my possessions and do not have to let me know if they have been in my apartment. I sincerely hope that the new staff last longer than a few months and takes tenant request seriously.

To the previous posters:
I have been nothing but nice and sincere with all my requests - nevertheless part of doing business is keeping the customer happy. Business is business and Summit Place shows a trend of not even offering a minimal acceptable level of service, especially for what the tenants are paying.

Do yourself a favor and consider another place to live. Take a look at Crowne at the Summit, The Overlook at St. Thomas, Champion Farms Apartments at Springhurst or Legends at Indian Springs. I wish I had!
