I lived here from Oct 2003 to Oct 2004 and I was not overly impressed.
On first viewing, the outside of the apt complex is very nice, well kept and I believe it's fairly new. On the inside, however, you can see that you're not getting the full value for your money.
The kitchen was a hole in the wall. It was so small that my roommate and I usually had to take turns using it because there was not enough room for both people to be in there at once. Cuboard space was limited and we ran out of room.
The only closet in the shared areas of the apt is a small hall closet. The master bedroom had two regularly sized closets and the second bedroom had one average sized closet. Not a lot of storage space.
The toilets were constantly running and it was LOUD. You could hear the toilet in the neighboring apt running all the time.
The towel rack in my bathroom fell off the wall within days of living there. It was fixed and stayed up on the wall for maybe a week before it broke again.
The washer-dryer hookups were in the master bedroom and it would take up one of your few closets if you got a washer and dryer. I don't know why it was set up that way, because basically, if you're living in a roommate situation like I was, it makes it too awkward to have a washer and dryer, unless the roommate in the master bedroom wants to share their room with you!
The on-site laundramat had short hours and I gave up trying to use it after it was constantly locked during what were supposed to be operational hours. Upon going to the office to find management to unlock the laundry room, I'd find a "be back later" sign on the door.
My biggest complaint was the water heater. The closet it was in was kept locked and we were not allowed to have a key. Within weeks of moving in, it burst and flooded the apt. Since I could not open the door to the closet, I had to stand there and watch it flood while I waited for maintenance to arrive.
The cleanup was VERY timeconsuming and inconveinent. We had to leave four industrial sized fans running 24 hours a day for several days to dry out the carpet and our LGE bill was HUGE as a result.
Maintenance actually told me that the water heaters had faulty parts and that ours was not the first to develop problems. Management knows of the faulty parts but is not willing to pay the expenses to have them fixed.
So even though the heaters are faulty, the closet they're in remains LOCKED, so in the event of a problem, the temant can't do anything about it.
Months later, the water heater developed a big leak and maintenance had to be called again to fix it.
The apt manager changed while we were there, but we were not informed. The old manager was alright, but the new one was awful. She NEVER returned any of my calls. I had to call DOZENS of times to get an answer for anything. She also gave me A LOT of attitude when I went in to give my notice that I wasn't renewing the lease and I had a lot of difficulty with her regarding the deposit, loose ends to be tied up, etc.
We paid a $150 refundable deposit and also a non-refundable $100 "move-in" fee.
Of the few good points, the grounds were nice and well kept and the neighborhood was very safe. The complex was within minutes of Meijer, Jefferson Mall and many many resturants.
Maintenance was always very nice and did their best to take care of the whole water-heater problem. However, anything we had fixed would break again, (Heater, running toilet, etc.) though I think that that's due more to cheap fixtures rather than bad maintenance.
Parking was fine, I was able to park right in front of my apt most of the time.
Being a new complex, the state of the apt was nice when we moved in; it looked like brand new.
All in all, however, the apt is NOT worth the $575 a month that we paid for it. The best part about it was the location and there are PLENTY of other Okolona apts that you could check out.
I would not live there again nor would I recommend it to anyone else.
**As of 11/3**
After SEVERAL phone calls and hassle, I finally received my deposit from White Oak. Not only did it take over a month, but they misspelled both mine and my ex-roommates names on the check.
