how nice your apartment is depends on who lived there before you

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
When my husband and I first moved in, our apartment was very nice and clean. It was a one bedroom, so when I got pregnant we let the manager know that we needed a two bedroom and would be switching when our lease was up. We had viewed other apartments before making the decision to just stay here and I honestly wish we had just moved somewhere more expensive, but we didn't since management had a rent special. When we first viewed the two bedroom, it was smelly, dirty, and the carpet was a mess. He assured us it hadn't been cleaned up yet and that they would shampoo the carpet. Except when moving day came, it was obvious they did absolutely nothing except shampoo the carpet and they did a very poor job at even that. My husband and I spent four hours cleaning it before we even brought our furniture in. They didn't even paint! The cabinets were covered in food and grease. There was mold on the floor near the dishwasher and the baseboards throughout the apartment were filthy and black. So were all the doors. Our front door didn't close in the traditional sense and there was no weatherstrip on our back door so the apartment was full of various bugs. The windows were covered in smoke film. The bathroom was filthy as well and the side of the vanity was water logged. The carpet was the worst. We complained but management said that the apartment was cleaned "to their standards". If you can believe that! They refused to replace the carpet. It's been a month and it is actually sticky in many places, peeling up, and the stains are back. It's awful and I can't fathom letting my baby crawl on it after she is born so who knows what we will do. All I know is that they acted like we were asking too much to want a clean apartment after the wonderful shape we left our one bedroom in.
