Don't move to Afton Oaks!

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2006
I had moved into Afton Oaks a few months after I got out of the service. I??ve been used to living in the barracks so I know what sub-standard living can be all about.
During the first few months I thought it was a nice place for a decent price. In 2003, a one bedroom went for $495, now it??s almost $550. Sadly, there are luxury apartment buildings in Baton Rouge today that go for the same amount and for more square footage. You get a tiny kitchen where you can barely open the oven door without hitting the other side. The living room can barley fit a full size couch. Finally the bedroom isn??t big enough for a king size bed.
Next is the noise, you have a bunch of people just don??t care about others. My tweaker neighbors on one side fought constantly. It was like listening to a redneck soap opera. The neighbors I had above me goose-stomped through the place often. Many of times people would drive through the parking lot blaring their car stereos.
Safety was never an issue because management never acknowledged it. During my stay, several cars have been broken into. Many people have had their apartments broken into as well. There were idiot tenants who decided to set the place ablaze because the left a hair dryer or curling iron on the bed.
Parents of bad kids were never held accountable. Every summer it was no surprise that someone??s kid shutoff the power to one of the buildings, tore up the tiny excuse of an exercise room, or terrorized my cat when it was in the window. Sometimes they wouldn??t move from the middle of the parking lot when you came home or try to screw with your car. One kid threw dirt on mine and he??s lucky I didn??t find out where he lived.
The maintenance crew is a bunch of morons. I??ve had a leaky air conditioner for six months. It took them several times that they finaly concluded the condensation collection plate was rusted through. You would think by the third time blowing out the drain pipe that it would be something else. I never trusted these guys, I think one of them was surfing the web on my computer as I found web pages in the history I know I never went to.
Best of all was when they leased all the remaining rooms to Shaw Inc. after Hurricane Katrina. These guys made so much noise and took up all the parking with both personal and company vehicles. Those six months was hell for those of us who had been residents for a while. I guess because we didn??t have the big bucks that Shaw had.
Finally the management staff is incompetent. Many of them sit on their behinds and chat away than try to help you out. They also don??t care what your problem is. The manager herself is an idiot. This woman couldn??t even add the total for my closing statement right trying to cheat me out of more money. Even worse, she tried to forfeit my deposit saying I skipped out even though I gave a 30 day notice and had her sign a receipt for the keys. Fortunately the company that owns Afton Oaks fixed those problems and that matter has been settled.
I would not recommend Afton Oaks to my worst enemy. I was a resident of three years and never missed a rent payment. I got into a situation where I had to move and the manager treated me like a piece of crap. I would only recommend it if the current staff was fired and new, competent, and friendly staff was hired.
