Dishonest Management

The property manager will not answer tough questions (e.g. questioning the policies of the complex) and refers you to the "owner". In his referral, he?ll give you a self-addressed envelope to an imaginary company named "Diversified Property Management" addressed to a P.O. Box. There is no other way to contact the "owner". My response from the "owner" came in the property manager?s handwriting, as he is responding to the requests he refers to the owner on behalf of the owner.

The electricity is not necessarily "paid" for in the rent. We received a notice from the management that when the electricity rates were sky-high, we were required to pay a utility surcharge (close to $100/month) that was supposed to end when the electric rates went down. Nearly 8 months after the rates went back to its normal levels, we were still being required to pay the surcharge. When I repeatedly asked about this, I was told that they needed to recover their costs and would continue to assess the surcharge until they did so.

They offered to remove my surcharge if I renewed my lease at the end of the current lease at the time. There was no mention of how long of a lease I was supposed to sign, so when I tried to renew my lease for 6 months instead of a year, they tried to make me continue paying half of the utility surcharge. He was extorting me to resign a 1-year lease.

It?s been one thing after another with this complex. We?re just so glad to be away from them.

Oh, and by the way:

1. There is mold on the outside & inside,

2. They PAINT the countertops in the kitchen & bathrooms (it actually appears that they go in after each tenant and slather a layer of EGGSHELL WHITE GLOSS paint all over everything),

3. There is excessive humidity/moisture inside. Our walls & floors stayed moist,

4. Maintenance/management come into your apartment with no advance notice (including at 8:00 on a Saturday morning, when they come in "accidentally," meaning to be at another apartment,

5. Our apartment was on the 1st floor and we would get runoff from the upstairs dishwasher...directly onto our patio,

6. Our building had an excess amount of YOUNG children. I would say anywhere from 10-15 kids played between the buildings everyday until nighttime. So, if you don?t have kids or like them, you may try to ask for a building with not so many kids.

7. Read up on any articles you can find about the "renovation" of Oak Alley.
