There are only two nice complexes in Lake Charles: River Oaks and The Charlestonian. Every place else is in a bad part of town and in need of serious repairs. Trust me, I looked at the cheaper places before ending up here. River Oaks is only a few years old and very well-maintained. Residents are mostly retirees and working professionals. There are very few families here ... in fact the only family-size apartments are in two buildings at the very back of the complex. The pool is very nice and the gazebo is a peaceful place to sit back and unwind. Security gates are rarely out of service. Parking is plentiful. The office staff is very nice, but they're all fairly new. When it looked like Hurricane Lili was heading this way, they had no idea whether the complex would flood. (Several co-workers said it most definitely would.) Getting here is a problem. Nelson Road has been under construction forever. Driving the 1.5 miles to the freeway can take 10-15 minutes at peak travel times because there's only one lane open in each direction. The roadwork should be done in the spring, but until then you'd better get to know your side streets. There's also only one entrance to the complex, which I find very disturbing in case of an emergency.
