Let me put it this way, in Metairie, don't go for so-called "economical" living. If you can afford to pay an extra $100-$200 a month more in a nicer place, you will not regret doing that in the long run, because it could buy you more peace of mind.

An "economical" apartment in an area like this will buy you parking headaches, noisy neighbors, only so-so maintenance, office staff that needs more than 1 request to get things done and a lack of personal safety (the area is really not great).

I am much happier now that I have since moved to a more upscale place (expensive apartment). The rent might be higher, but it's worth the $4 extra/day to me because I sleep better at night. Sometimes you get what you pay for.
