Moving to New Orleans, My girlfriend and I were getting conflicting reports about Forest Isle - "They're great - my parents spend winters there!" "They're in a weird neighborhood." "They're soooooo far from downtown."
After fourteen months here, I can definitely say that two of the above are absolutely true - the neighborhood thing seems to be a fact of life here in New Orleans - even the Garden District and French Quarter vary wildly in the space of two blocks.
The lie is the distance thing - it's ten minutes to the French Quarter. Fifteen or twenty at rush hour. After living in both Washington DC and Brooklyn, that's nothing to complain about.
The management personnel are absolutely terriffic, maintenance is very responsive, and everyone seems genuinely friendly and helpful. The pool is clean and well-maintained, and the fact that there is an adults-only pool is a HUGE bonus.
Rent's extremely reasonable, and there are plenty of incentives available to residents - discount pizza nights, group events - that let you interact with your neighbors if you want.
Yes, you can hear your neighbors if they get rambunctious, and when a big storm hits, moving your car to the high side of the parking lots is necessary. Dodging the occasional windblown pinecone and putting up with the shoddy pavement along the last block of Woddland Drive is the worst that most folks need to worry about.
I can't put it any better than this: We've recommended Forest Isle to friends and coworkers as a great place to live.
We've just renewed our lease.
