Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006

Hi,
I've lived at the boulders since May 2006. My room mate, who just moved out, has lived here for almost 2 years. Now granted, I've only been here for the summer, I've got to say, it's not that bad.
The appartments are a beautiful size, but I can't lie and say they're not shabby, because they are. The rugs are grimy and gross, the walls are stained and dirty, the kitchen is disgusting, and the bathroom sink is falling appart (litterally falling away from the wall).
It's certainly not the life of the rich and the famous, but it's not at all unberable. I've read that people feel it's too noisy. I have never once heard a peep from a single person. Of course, like I mentioned, it is summer, and my building is an exception due to the fact that I'm almost positive there are only 3 appartments occupied here. But that's not to say the school year will be like this.
It's definately a "poor college kid's" living, but don't be scared by all that you read in these posts. Yes, there are a lot of poor people, "gangstas", and low income families, but I've never had a problem with any of them, regardless of the history of muggings and break ins.
As for management, they seem to have a hands off aproach. I'd reccomend just fixing things yourself if you want them fixed, because it's not always worth the wait.
The office staff, however, is very nice. The two women I've dealt with have been very considerate and helpful. One even gave me a free laundry card when I was low on funds.
Parking has never been an issue for me. Friday and Saturday nights, you'll see the lots a little more full, but they're generally not that bad. On average, there's about 1 spot per appartment that sit directly in front of the building, but it's not that hard to just walk an extra 20 feet from a further spot.
The price is the real reason people live here. Although they've just raised the appartment rate for a 2 bedroom from 825 to 850, it's still not that bad. I've been living here with 2 other people (one of us just lives in the living room because it really is that big) and rent has only been 275 a month, and you really can't beat that.
In terms of the laundry situation, it does suck for me, because a fire in the building attatched to mine caused the laundry room to be closed, but it's not that long of a walk to the next set of buildings. The machines have also just recently been replaced by newer, better ones that do have a spin dry, and tumble dry function. The only down side is that the washer's are aout this big

no lie. I managed to squeeze in my laundry basket's worth of clothes, but that was packign them in tight. That's the only downside to them. The laundry rooms themselves are decent, and relatively clean.
as for the hallways, if they smell, it's generally someone in your hallway making it, because none of the hallways I've been in smell at all. Mine doesn't. I sometimes even take a chair out there and read a book by the window when people are trying to sleep with the lights off in my appt. And the hallways are hardly ever noisy. Like I said, there aren't any other people on my floor, but I don't see how they could be noisy.
The walls most certainly aren't paper thin. I was blasting my stereo and sub woofer in my room earlier, and I wanted to see whether or not people could hear me, so I went into my room mate's bedroom and closed the door and could barely hear it, and also went into the hallway and closed the appt door and could barely hear it, so I don't see how noise could be an issue unless you like absolute silence at all times.
All in all, the boulders are like any other appartment complex. I've lived in worse in new york, trust me, the boulders is a palace compared to those.
The saftey may be a bigger issue on a friday or saturday night during the school year, but it's not always an isue.
The parking lots are generously large for an appt complex.
The appartments and rooms themselves are very large and accomodating.
The upkeep and appearance of the appartments is shabby, but not unbearable.
The maintinance people can be slow with repairs, but to be honest, I've taken most of them into my own hands. (screens, windows, doorknobs, cabinets) and only spend a couple dollars each time.
The office staff are nice. And the excercise room is nice also.
And the grounds are typically well kept, with nice green grass and trash free parking lots.
I know this was long, but I felt the boulders needed some justifications. People will insult the place the live simply because of the people they share the living space with. Everyone knows bad neighbors make your apparmtent seem worse than it is, so noise, smell, and cleanliness opinions are really to be taken lightly.
It's really not that bad, but you can't expect to be living in a beautiful palace. It's an appartment. Not the queen's vacation complex. odusyNYCcZ7yL3Bj5JtG

"I've lived in worse in new york, trust me, the boulders is a palace compared to those" Amherst -country town with population ~35, 000 NY city - population ~ 13 million There is no comparison! For $850 apartment in the middle of a field you should expect a palace not merely "not unbearable" "grimy and gross, stained and dirty, disgusting, falling apart" place which may or may not be dangerous on the weekend. AND why would the management do anything when you're so willing to fix the place for " a couple of dollars each time" |

850 is very cheap for a two bedroom, even for a small town like Amherst. Believe me, I have looked around and this is the lower end of the spectrum. So expect what you pay for. Not the most well constructed of buildings, but there are benefits to living here as well...
