If you have nerves of steel and are REALLY laid-back, this place MIGHT be okay for you...

... But unfortunately, my boyfriend and I cannot WAIT until our lease expires in a month and change.
To be as brief as possible, here are the worst issues we've encountered in our 10.5 months living here:
-- The walls are paper thin, revealing to us a neighbour with a digirido, some sumo restlers in training, and a nightly open house hip hop party, beginning at midnight. SOME noise is tolerable, and understandable given this building is mostly inhabited by college students. But the around-the-clock noise just wears on anyone.
-- The lack of hot water throughout almost the entire winter, including two straight weeks without it at all. Not to mention we still have this problem on occasion and it's July.
-- The students who just don't care that other people inhabit this complex. People party on the roof until all hours of the night, throwing beer bottles and other random crap off the roof because they're too lazy to bring their trash with them and dispose of it properly. On MORE than one occasion, one of the stair railings in the lobby has been ripped out and left chillin in the lobby. There are older (and elderly) people that live in this apartment, and some of them need that railing to assist them in getting up those few stairs. Plus, it just looks awful to walk into a building where one of the first things you see is an unkempt lobby.
-- there is a large crack in our hallway ceiling, from which paint chips have slowly but steadily been falling. I just hope that ceiling holds until we move out.

On the plus side, management is VERY friendly on the phone, the view into Fenway is pretty damn killer, and the apartment itself IS a good size for what you are paying in this area of Boston, especially compared to others. But don't let its close proximity to school, food, and fun get in the way of some other issues that you don't get to experience until you have signed yourself into a deal. I am happy my boyfriend and I are moving out; this DEFINITELY wasn't what we would have picked for our first place together had we known the hidden perils of 1179 Boylston St.
