For a location like that, you have to give some (important) stuff up.

Like a maintenance company that care if you have a gas leak. No, really, I called Fineberg because I smelled gas in the apartment. I had class in an hour and they told me, "We've put your name down." When I responded that I needed to leave for class, she told me that it wasn't her problem and that they would get to it. My bad, I guess, for being from Florida and never having dealt with a gas stove before. Should have called the actually gas company first -- as soon as I did that, someone was dispatched, but they told me that the gas had already been turned off and there was nothing they could do. Thanks, Fineberg, for making me look like a total douchebag -and- putting me in danger!
Other than that... well, it's an old building. I never -saw- any mice, though there was a perfectly round hole eaten through the screen on my kitchen window. However, because heat is included in the rent price, they regulate it for you and like to leave it on even when it's 80 degrees out. Or turn it off when it's 15. You get the idea. Luckily, someone had installed a window unit into my room, but you can't run the air and the heater at the same time or your breaker will go. I spent a lot of nights naked on top of the covers.
Didn't see any roaches in my 5th-floor apartment, though they were rampant in the basement; people were either nice or nonexistent -- lived there six months and didn't make so much as one friend, but that could also be my personality. Location is wonderful, though as a single female you don't really want to walk around alone even down Newberry past 8 or 9, I had a pretty wonderful encounter with that. 10 minute walk from Hynes/Kenmore stations, 24-hour Shaws (great for going to get ice cream with the boyfriend at 3 AM), Best Buy, all of the shops on Newberry (for during the day, and including a JOHN FLUEVOG, omg)... all around it's a great location, especially for Berklee students. The proximity to Fenway is really awesome -- great to hear the crowd cheering, though you might want to steer clear of going outdoors with crazy sox fans if that's not your thing. The walls are pretty thin though, and one of my neighbors LOVES Dave Matthews, blaring at all hours.
Laundry machines never worked to the point where I had a service (Husky Express) pick up/deliver my laundry, and because we don't have a doorman they had to just leave it in the doorway and stuff did get stolen. I never really felt unsafe, I guess, -inside- the apartment. Maintenance -is- awful, though, and the place is falling apart - giant hole in my ceiling, oven handle fell off, hot water going out randomly. All in all, I left calling the place a sh!thole, but I was happy that I sacrificed luxury for location in this instance.
Feel free to contact me at j_catt08 at hotmail dot com if you have any questions about this place, I'd be happy to help -- finding housing in Boston is a nightmare!
