I wrote a long and negative review, but it disappeared--so here is another

A couple of months after I wrote it I received an e-mail stating that it was taken off because I mentioned names. There are no names in this posting. It should stay or else I'll keep reposting it.

To start off with, I had inadequate heat for two winters and complained over phone and wrote letters--to which the maintenance man said, "It's cold everywhere." Finally, they DUCT-TAPED MY WINDOWS SHUT (hello, fire hazard, anyone'). Oh, and I had a toilet that did not work and for which I made numerous phone calls only to hear the elderly woman who works there claim that I had not informed them properly (I had to write letters and fax them over because she never understood my detailed phone messages about my clogged toilet). Oh, and I should mention that my wall panel collapsed and ceiling started caving in. The elderly woman had trouble understanding that message, too. Here's the loveliest part of the story: One spring evening sewage backed up into my apartment, and I called and the guy (with a Greek accent) at AF Doyle yelled and argued with me and said he wasn't going to do anything until the morning. Meanwhile sewage was bubbling up through my drains and filling my bathtub. I took matters into my own hands and followed the Boston Water & Sewer Commission up and down the street all night and couldn't go to work the next day because it didn't get fixed until the afternoon. And apparently this Greek guy doesn't understand English very well because even after I told him that I'd made the calls to Metro Sewer and the Commission he STILL argued with me! About what, I don't know. At the very end, I called to let AF Doyle know how it turned out, and what was the first thing I was told' "It's not our fault." I didn't say yes or no, tried to get off the phone. Again, I was told by the elderly woman, "It's not our fault."

Still wondering if you should rent from them' The clincher: I HAD TO SUE THEM! They WITHHELD my security deposit because they claimed I had "damaged" the carpet. It was old, ripped-up industrial carpet, bunched up and uneven from the day I moved in. There was a dark iron burn in the dark carpet that I didn't notice when I filled out the inspection form. Watch out, everyone! Fill it out carefully. They charged me for replacing the ENTIRE carpet! Took it out of my security deposit! I had a court date set, and guess what--they scheduled a vacation for that date! Their lawyer, who coincidentally lives one block from my current address, finally tried to bargain two weeks before the new date to pay half, and I said no. Five months after I filed the lawsuit, by the time we went to court, they still had not replaced the carpet. I won and got my money back. I talked for a total of seven minutes. Their lawyer did most of the talking, and he brought two other people in, and had pictures. All I had was myself and my argument. The judge believed ME. That should give you an idea of what obvious cheaters these people are.

I kept all of my correspondence with AF Doyle--the requests for maintenance and the letters back and forth with their lawyer. If you are comfortable renting from these cheaters, take note of everything and keep written records. Don't let them take advantage of you, because they will.
